This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XII. The School. In 1784 an exchange of land took place between the Kev. George Lefroy and Mr. Joseph Portal, and then, according to the deed, Rev. George Lefroy exchanged "a cottage built and a garden made" for his use by the said testator for the site on which the cottage now stands next the rectory premises with its garden. This cottage was built by the Rev. George Lefroy, and continued in his family until 1837. During that time it appears to have been inhabited by the gardeners. In 1837 the cottage and garden were conveyed to William Hicks Beach of Oakley Hall. From him it passed to his son, William Wither Bramston Beach. And from him conveyed to Mortimer George Thoyts, Esq., of Sulhamstead, Berks, in 1873. This cottage was the original school-house of Ashe. It appears to have been used as such during the incumbency of Rev. Benjamin Lefroy and Rev. Charles Murray, by whom Jane Wilmot (died 1835), and Martha Wake were appointed mistresses. The latter died in 1858, and was succeeded by a Mrs. Collett, who died in 1870. Jane Kemp, of Oakley, took charge of the school for a time, between Martha Wake and Mr?. Collett. Her successor was a Miss Ivimey, who left the parish after the death of Mr. Pettat in 1873. It will be remembered that in 1870 the Education Act of Mr. Forster was passed, which obliged proper school accommodation to be provided in accordance with the exigencies of each parish or district. It was proposed to link together the parishes of Ashe, Deane and Steventon, but when difficulties arose with regard to the site for the school, the Education Department permitted Ashe to remain a separate parish, with its own school and teacher. In 1872 a school was commenced building on the opposite side of the road to the old...

Excerpt from A History of Esse or Ashe: Hamshire In launching this little volume on the deep sea of the kindness of my friends and neighbours, I feel that it is but as a tiny cockle-shell among superior and more important vessels. In front it has the elaborate "Volume of The Vyne" and the "Mysteries of St. Mary Bourne," and behind, the "History of Basingstoke." Still I trust that it will be accepted with all its roughness and imperfection. I ask all leniency from its readers. Its title is "A History of Esse or Ashe." But it does not claim to be exhaustive. It would, perhaps, be better styled "A Collection of Things Ancient and Modern relating to Ashe," and, maybe, such as would lack interest for others to set in order. An insightful portrait of Austen’s friend and fellow writer Anne Lefroy and the society that surrounded these two literary women. In this insightful new biography of Anne Lefroy, Judy Stove investigates the life of a writer who had a direct and undeniable influence on the life and works of Jane Austen. Jane shared some of her earliest writings with Anne, who became a devoted confidant; it is believed that their friendship was an essential component in their creativity. As a published female writer, Anne was an immense source of inspiration to Jane as she developed her own talents. Judy Stove, a member of the Jane Austen Society of Australia, brings a wealth of insight to this illuminating history of a literary friendship. She has uncovered fascinating snippets of information relating to Anne Lefroy’s circle, and her book addresses developments across a period of great social and political change. Setting Lefroy’s life in context, she looks at the war against Napoleon and illustrates evolutions in healthcare as well as changes in religious beliefs and practices that shaped the world of these remarkable women.
