For survey courses in Italian Renaissance art. A broad survey of art and architecture in Italy between c. 1250 and 1600, this book approaches the works from the point of view of the artist as individual creator and as an expression of the city within which the artist was working. History of Italian Renaissance Art, Seventh Edition, brings you an updated understanding of this pivotal period as it incorporates new research and current art historical thinking, while also maintaining the integrity of the story that Frederick Hartt first told so enthusiastically many years ago. Choosing to retain Frederick Hartt's traditional framework, David Wilkins' incisive revisions keep the book fresh and up-to-date.

The History Of Italian Painting written by Luigi Lanzi and has been published by e-artnow this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-07 with Art categories.

This Lanzi's work features the history of painting in Italy from the period of the revival of the fine arts to the end of the 18th century. The method that the author applies in treating of each school is as follows: he first gives a general character of each school; then he distinguishes it into three, four, or more epochs, according as its style underwent changes with the change of taste. A few celebrated painters, who have swayed the public taste, and given a new tone to the art, are placed at the head of each epoch. He has also taken notice of some arts which are analogous to painting, and though they differ from it in the materials employed, or the manner of using them, may still be included in the art; for example, engraving of prints, inlaid and mosaic work, and embroidering tapestry. The author commences by treating in the two first volumes of that part of Italy, which, through the genius of Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Rafael, became first conspicuous, and first exhibited a decided character in painting. Those artists were the ornaments of the Florentine and Roman schools, from which he proceeds to two others, the Sienese and Neapolitan. About the same time Giorgione, Tiziano and Correggio, began to flourish in Italy; three artists, who as much advanced the art of coloring, as the former improved design; and of these luminaries of Upper Italy are treated in the third and fourth volumes. Then follows the school of Bologna, in which the attempt was made to unite the excellences of all the other schools: this commences the fifth volume; and on account of proximity it is succeeded by that of Ferrara, and Upper and Lower Romagna. The school of Genoa, which was late in acquiring celebrity, succeeds, and the book is concluded with that of Piedmont, which, though it cannot boast so long a succession of artists as those of the other states, has merits sufficient to entitle it to a place in a history of painting.

This book has been written to meet the needs of those who are beginning the study of Italian painting. These needs are very definite: clarity, continuity of thought, and the omission of all material that, although interesting to advanced students, is bound to be confusing to beginners. - Preface.

Published in two volumes, this major work provides a history of Italian art from antiquity to the present day. A distinguished group of cultural historians provides a comprehensive account of Italian "art" in the wider sense: as well as painting and sculpture, they examine photography and iconography, restorations and fakes, landscapes and writing. They focus not only on individual artists and epochs, but on the conditions under which Italian art was and is created: its principles, intentions and effects. Together the books represent a radical break with the compendium of facts and works found in conventional books on art history, exploring the mentalities and the institutions, the typography and the geography which have determined the main characteristics of Italian art over a thousand years. Volume One includes contributions from Peter Burke on the history of the Italian artist from the twelfth to the twentieth century, Enrico Castelnuovo and Carlo Ginzburg on regional art outside the traditional centres, Nicole Dacos on antique art, Francis Haskell on the "dispersal" and conservation of artistic works, and Anna Maria Mura on the public reception of art. Volume Two includes contributions from Giovanni Previtali on the periodization of Italian art history, Giovanni Romero on art and everyday life in the Renaissance court, Salvadore Settis on iconography in the Middle Ages; Bruno Toscano on art and the church in the seventeenth century, and Federico Zeri on the concept of the Renaissance and the conflict between historical and art-historical periods.

"This volume traces a panorama, one never before observed, of the last century of Italian art within a 'global' framework, choosing that is, the most distanced and wide-ranging perspective in order to be the most all-inclusive outside Italy and Europe. Furthermore, the historical line followed is also one of the first for Italian art to take account of the postmodern revolution and to follow every step of the alternating supremacies of modernity and antimodernity in the artistic research from 1900 to 2000." - book jakcet.
