This book covers the history of kinematics from the Greeks to the 20th century. It shows that the subject has its roots in geometry, mechanics and mechanical engineering and how it became in the 19th century a coherent field of research, for which Ampère coined the name kinematics. The story starts with the important Greek tradition of solving construction problems by means of kinematically defined curves and the use of kinematical models in Greek astronomy. As a result in 17th century mathematics motion played a crucial role as well, and the book pays ample attention to it. It is also discussed how the concept of instantaneous velocity, unknown to the Greeks, etc was introduced in the late Middle Ages and how in the 18th century, when classical mechanics was formed, kinematical theorems concerning the distribution of velocity in a solid body moving in space were proved. The book shows that in the 19th century, against the background of the industrial revolution, the theory of machines and thus the kinematics of mechanisms received a great deal of attention. In the final analysis, this led to the birth of the discipline.

This book gathers the latest advances in the field of history of science and technology, as presented by leading international researchers at the 8th International Symposium on History of Machines and Mechanisms (HMM), held in Ankara, Turkey on April 18-20, 2024. The Symposium, which was promoted by the permanent commission for the History of Machine and Mechanism Science (MMS) of IFToMM, provided an international forum to present and discuss historical developments in the field of MMS. The contents cover all aspects of the development of MMS from antiquity until the present era and its historiography: modern reviews of past works, engineers in history and their works, the development of theories, history of the design of machines and mechanisms, historical developments of mechanical design and automation, historical developments of teaching, the history of schools of engineering, the education of engineers. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, highlight numerous exciting ideas that will spur novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaborations.

Space And Political Universalism In Early Modern Physics And Philosophy written by Pablo Bustinduy and has been published by Edinburgh University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-05 with Business & Economics categories.
How did early modern philosophy of space shape the modern concept of political universalism? In this book, Pablo Bustinduy persuasively argues that political universalism emerged from both the developments of Newtonian science and the formulation of the modern philosophy of the State. In the metaphysics of an open, empty, abstract and absolute space, Bustinduy suggests, the universalist project of modern politics found its logical model and foundation. There, the anxiety of a dislocated world was overcome, and the ontology of modern physics found a specific political expression that, despite being besieged by multiple crises, still animates our political imagination. By offering a political reading of early modern philosophy of space, Space and Political Universalism in Early Modern Physics and Philosophy reveals the connections between the logical development of early modern science, the contemporary elaborations of the philosophy of the State, and the historical articulations of the Westphalian system, early capitalist social formations, and the European colonial project. In doing so, it offers a powerful reflection on how we might detach democracy from the 'perilous metaphysics' of infinite space that has engendered political violence and domination, positing space as an emptiness that prevents the closure of the political itself.

Have we misunderstood the fourth spatial dimension all along? Motion: The Fourth Spatial Dimension makes a bold case for reimagining what scientists and philosophers have puzzled over for centuries. Rather than relying on abstract, mentally uncomfortable descriptions of hidden directions in space, this book proposes a radical shift: that existing four-dimensional geometry is actually a representation of a three-dimensional object’s motion. And the math? It already fits. Real-world applications in 3D motion programming align seamlessly with the mathematics of 4D geometry. As technologies like holography, drone displays, and virtual reality evolve, this idea may be arriving at just the right moment. Astonishingly, this concept has remained untouched—not only in mathematics and philosophy, but even on the fringes of new age thought. Join author Saint Stuart—a self-described Christian mystic with a background in journalism and spiritual philosophy—as he explores a dimensional progression that doesn’t stop at motion. From force as the fifth and final dimension tied to space, to possibility and intelligence as the sixth and seventh within the realm of consciousness, this book offers a visionary new map of reality.
