A historical review of the description and treatment of lung cancer, designed as a tool for medical researchers and practitioners, but also accessible to non-medical readers who are versed in modern scientific concepts. It presents and discusses source material from as early as the 16th century (Agricola, Paracelsus), including excerpts from texts, reproductions of book pages, drawings, and the x-ray and microscopic photographs of this century. The history is presented not as a string of events, but as an inexorable drive to the present, an approach rarely encountered or admitted to in the history of anything but science. Separately, volume one costs $65; volume two, $72. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Oxford Case Histories in Lung Cancer contains a comprehensive selection of 40 clinical cases that reflects the multidisciplinary approach to the management of lung cancer. Written by authors specialising in respiratory medicine, oncology, pathology, radiology, palliative care, and thoracic surgery, the cases cover both incidents commonly faced in clinical practice, or those that pose particular challenges. Each case consists of a brief case history, followed by questions and answers to discuss common questions arising during the management of lung cancer. The answers are based on the best available evidence from the latest research, and should help optimise the diagnostic pathways available to patients. The text is also extensively illustrated with over 75 CT and MRI scans and X-ray images to help the reader develop interpretative skills. The book may also be used in multidisciplinary sessions to help make arguments for patient care decisions based on real-life scenarios. This is an essential new resource for both trainees and recently appointed consultants who will work with patients who have lung cancer, specialist nurses, and lung cancer MDT co-ordinators.

Approximately 85% of all instances of lung cancer are classified as non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The reason it is called "non-small-cell" lung cancer is that, when examined under a microscope, the cancer cells are bigger than small-cell lung cancer cells. The most prevalent subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) include adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and giant cell carcinoma. Important Information about Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer 1. NSCLC Types: Adenocarcinoma: This subtype is more common in non-smokers and ex-smokers and frequently starts in the outer regions of the lungs. Squamous Cell Carcinoma: This type of cancer is usually located in the lungs' central airways and is highly correlated with a history of smoking. Less frequently occurring, large cell carcinoma can develop anywhere in the lung. It usually spreads and grows swiftly. 2. Reasons and Danger Factors: NSCLC is primarily caused by smoking, although nonsmokers can also get this kind of lung cancer. A family history of lung cancer, exposure to secondhand smoke, and environmental contaminants like radon and asbestos are other risk factors.
