Wilbur H. Siebert published his landmark study of the Underground Railroad in 1898, revealing a secret system of assisted slave escapes. A product of his time, Siebert based his research on the accounts of northern white male abolitionists. While useful in understanding the northern boundaries of the slaves' journey, Siebert's account leaves out the complicated narrative of assistance below the Mason-Dixon Line. In The Gospel of Freedom: Black Evangelicals and the Underground Railroad, author Alicestyne Turley positions Kentucky as a crucial "pass through" territory for escaping slaves and addresses the important contributions of white and black antislavery southerners who united to form organized networks to assist slaves in the Deep South. Drawing on family history and lore as well as a large range of primary sources, Turley shows how free and enslaved African Americans directly influenced efforts to physically and spiritually resist slavery and how slaves successfully developed their own systems to help others who were enslaved below the Mason-Dixon Line. Illuminating the roles of these black freedom fighters, Turley questions the validity of long-held conclusions based on Siebert's original work and suggests new areas of inquiry for further exploration. The Gospel of Freedom seeks to fill the historical gaps and promote the lost voices of the Underground Railroad.

Excerpt from The History of Methodism in Kentucky, Vol. 1 The History of Methodism in Kentucky cannot be otherwise than interesting, if faithfully delineated. Organized in the District when there was scarcely a cabin outside of the forts in all its broad domain - its standard-bearers exposed to privations, sufferings, and dangers, the recital of which seem more like romantic stories, selected from the legends of fable, than the sober realities of history -planted and nourished amid opposition and difficulties that brave hearts only could surmount, the extraordinary success that has attended it, growing up in eighty years from a single society of only a few members to a membership of nearly fifty thousand, with more than five hundred ministers, (traveling and local, ) church-edifices in every community, schools and seminaries of learning in different portions of the Slate - its truths proclaimed in every neighborhood, and its vital energies and hallowed influence imparting life to other Christian communions, it is invested with an importance at once attractive and commanding. ""My Best for the Kingdom provides a valuable history of several little-known events in early Mormon history--the Church in Tennessee and Kentucky in the 1830s, the Danites in Missouri, Mormon resistance to Missouri persecutions, ... the James Emmett expedition, [and] pioneer Spanish Fork, Utah...John L. Butler's autobiography, given here in full, rivals and adds to the accounts of Hosea Stout and John D. Lee in telling the Mormon story of the 1830s, '40s, and '50s. Butler was a valiant militiaman, missionary, frontiersman, and bishop. A fast-moving, informative, well-researched and well-told account of Mormonism on the frontier...and pioneer Utah.""--Leonard J. Arrington quoted on the back outside jacket. This is the 3rd printing of My Best for the Kingdom (ISBN 978-1-365-73968-2) and is the same as the 2nd printing (ISBN 978-0-9843965-2-8) and 1st printing (ISBN 1-56236-212-7) versions except that the front & end papers (family chart and map) on the previous versions are now included as the final two pages.
