Excerpt from A History of Modern Liberty, Vol. 1 I Purpose in this work to trace the history of liberty throughout is called the modern use. Liberty throughout what is called the modern age. Liberty in the general sense I take to be the free development of man, subject of course to the limits of such development inseparable from human life. Absolute liberty is the prerogative of no mortal. Man is subject to the conditions of his being. He derives his existence from another. He is dependent on others as well as himself for its maintenance. Its span is short and uncertain at the best. Looking at human life merely from the material standpoint, man's insufficiency, dependence are patent enough. They are equally patent from the spiritual point of view. The human spirit is instinctively conscious of subjection to an intelligence infinitely superior to it, and this feeling of subjection is expressed in one form or another in its religious beliefs and usages. Again, as a political and social unit, the individual is conscious of restraints as well as rights. In whatever relation we regard him - material, moral, political, social - limitation, subjection is the law of his life. So much granted as a matter of course, it is nevertheless true that liberty, within certain limits, is also a law of human life. The human will is free, to a certain extent at least, as is evidenced by our consciousness of the fact, and exemplified in countless acts of volition. A great part of my experience is a matter of my own volition, for which I must hold myself, as well as circumstances, responsible. Man is not a mere machine driven by the motor force of necessity. He has, to a certain extent, his destiny in his own hands. If it were not so, to speak of liberty, far less to attempt to write a history of it, would be an utter delusion. Published for the first time in 1904, The Evolution of Modern Liberty was originally intended to be a comparison study of the American and French bills of rights. However, Scherger expanded his volume into much more—a timeless look at the modern idea of liberty and the steps taken to get there. A fragment of history in and of itself, this classic of early twentieth-century historical study is a must-have for the collection of any history or political buff. Coming up on its 110th year of publication, this volume is a fascinating insight on the notion of liberty, published during a time when it was still unfolding. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Excerpt from The Rise of the Dutch Republic, Vol. 1 of 3: A History The rise of the Dutch Republic must ever be regarded as one of the leading events of modern times. Without the birth of this great common wealth, the various historical phenomena of the sixteenth and following centuries must have either not existed, or have presented themselves under essential modifications. Itself an organised pro test against ecclesiastical tyranny and universal empire, the Republic guarded with sagacity, at many critical periods in the world's history, that balance Of power which, among civilised states, ought always to be identical with the scales Of divine justice. The splendid empire of Charles the Fifth was erected upon the grave of liberty. It is a consolation to watch afterwards the gradual but triumphant resurrection of its spirit. From the hand-breadth of territory called the province of Holland rises a power which wages eighty years' warfare with the most potent empire upon earth, and which, during the progress of the struggle, becoming itself a mighty state, and binding about its own slender form a zone of the richest possessions of earth, from pole to tropic, finally dictates its decrees to the empire of Charles. Excerpt from The Florentine Histories, Vol. 1 of 2 For: three hundred years the Florentine Histories have been regarded with veneration by the scholars of Europe. It is one of those few works to which the judgment of successive generations has assigned a high place in the annals of the world. It has been consulted by the student of History to explore the majestic ruins of the Roman empire, for the origin of all modern states-by the philosopher to trace the progress of light and liberty, as they travelled down through the gloom of the middle ages - by the vindicators of man and of truth, to read the story of their servitude, their struggles and their triumphs.
