In this rich and compelling volume, Peter Ellingsen traces the intellectual and institutional development of Freud's ideas in Australia with the meticulous attention of the historian, and the questioning eye and sharp pen of the writer. Professor Dany Nobus, Chair of Psychology and Psychoanalysis Head of the School of Social Sciences, Brunel University, UK. This is a book in which psychoanalysis goes on the couch. For the first time, and drawing on the teaching of not just Freud but also Melanie Klein, Anna Freud and Jacques Lacan, psychoanalysis in Australia is subject to a lengthy interrogation. From the earliest awakenings more than a century ago, to the 1970s arrival of Lacanian analysts and the transformation of psychoanalysis, the trajectory of a unique theory of the self is charted. This ground-breaking book examines the major theories of psychoanalysis, along with the narrative of those who sought to introduce it to Australia. It is a rich tapestry in which Freud's dream of coming to Australia is matched by Australia's dream of his arrival. Along the way the wilderness that Australia was for Freud is considered beside the outback white settlers sought to subdue, and the unruly unconscious that was the whole point of psychoanalysis. Peter Ellingsen, psychoanalyst and award-winning writer, wonders why psychoanalysis -- said to be 'the grandest and purest of those apparatuses for the generation of knowledge-power' -- has evaded being analysed in Australia. The result is, according to Professor Dany Nobus, 'a compelling, original, volume'. As an 'an excellent piece of work its original approach and Lacanian underpinnings will generate thought-provoking debate.'

Psychoanalysisone of the most important intellectual developments of the twentieth century- is perhaps as much a cultural experience as a clinical one. This groundbreaking book is the first to examine the history and impact of Freudian ideas in Australia. Joy Damousi shows that ways of understanding our emotional and interior lives have a notable and complex history that challenges Australian stereotypes of shallow hedonism and emotional barrenness. By linking psychoanalysis with modernity, the book is, in effect, an alternative history oftwentieth century Australia.

A History Of The Case Study written by Birgit Lang and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with History categories.

This collection tells the story of the case study genre at a time when it became the genre par excellence for discussing human sexuality across the humanities and life sciences. It is a transcontinental journey from the imperial world of fin-de-siècle Central Europe to the interwar metropolises of Weimar Germany and to the United States of America in the post-war years. Foregrounding the figures of case study pioneers, and highlighting their often radical engagements with the genre, the book scrutinises the case writing practices of Sigmund Freud and his predecessor sexologist Richard von Krafft-Ebing; writers including Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and Alfred Döblin; Weimar intellectuals such as Erich Wulffen and psychoanalyst Viola Bernard. The results are important new insights into the continuing legacy of such writers and into the agency increasingly claimed by the readerships that emerged with the development of modernity.

This book reconstructs the story of Roy Coupland Winn 1890-1963, Australia's first fulltime practising psychoanalyst, of whom it was said that he was 'dedicated to the continual inner search to understand himself and others'. From a background of privilege, he volunteered in 1915 and cut his teeth as a military medic on Gallipoli. On the Western Front he gained a Military Cross, lost his foot and was left wondering if he wasn't losing his mind too. In recuperation, he first encountered psychoanalysis - as a patient. He also wrote Men May Rise, a novel he said was 'rather more biographical than customary'. The author has provided a superb chart of her grandfather's war and early post-war years from it, showing how he had already embarked on the inner search. Back in Sydney, the new psychoanalysis was widely mistrusted in medical circles, but he lived his own life, professional and private, according to his own code, 'seemingly unswayed by the prevailing moral climate or conventional social niceties'. Witty, self-mocking, insightful and inventive, the kindness and tolerance others saw in him is perhaps best expressed in these lines he once wrote: Most satisfying hope of human race Immortal history in a baby's face.
