The very first history of the British colonisation of the land which later became famous as Rhodesia, and is now called Zimbabwe. This book, first published in 1900, was specifically commissioned by famous British Imperialist Cecil John Rhodes and his British South Africa Company (BSAC) with the intention of countering some of the negative publicity which the BSAC had encountered since their venture into the interior had created the first European settlements north of the Boer Republics. Using firsthand accounts gathered directly from the official BSAC archives, this book provides a gripping insight into the struggles of those early European pioneers-and of the intense and long-lasting resistance they encountered from the African inhabitants. Revealed along the way of this war-filled narrative are interesting facts such as the total population of the region in 1900; the personal intervention of Rhodes in a meeting with the Matabele chiefs to try and stop the ongoing wars; and many other incidents and facts vital for anyone seeking to gain an understanding of the origin of the later conflict in that land. The work also contains two interesting chapters dealing with the Rhodesian colonists' participation in the Second Anglo-Boer War, which was still raging at the time this book first appeared. Now with 14 new and rare illustrations. Fully indexed.

Before there was Zimbabwe, there was Rhodesia, a British colony founded by the great capital imperialist Cecil John Rhodes, and administered by the British South Africa Company. Rhodesia was the last British territory in Africa, and the most difficult to divest. This is the story of a gifted land, bitterly contested as the final imperial chapter in Africa. Through war and peace, following the careers of some of the great African leaders of the modern age, this was the last, painful transition from colonial to liberated Africa.A story intricately told and meticulously researched. For all enthusiasts of African and British Imperial history, this book is a must read!

This is the earliest history of the British colony of Rhodesia, written only eight years after the first white settlement and based on exclusive access to the files of Cecil John Rhodes' British South Africa Company. Written by one of Britain's leading war correspondents, A History of Rhodesia is a book of its time: unashamedly jingoistic, pro-Empire, anti-Boer and anti-Matabele, it provides a remarkable insight into the personalities and mindset of the builders of the British Empire.

This book explores the social and economic development of Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi over the course of the twentieth century. These three countries have long shared and interconnected pasts. All three were drawn into the British Empire at a similar time and the formation of the ill-fated Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland formally linked these countries together for a decade in the mid-twentieth century. This formal political relationship created dynamics that resulted in yet closer economic and social links. After Federation, the economic realities of industry, transport and labour supplies meant that these three countries continued to be intricately interconnected. Yet despite these connected pasts, comparative work on the economic histories of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and how these change over time, is rare. This book addresses the gap by providing the first comprehensive collection of labour and census data across the twentieth century for these three countries. The different economic models and performances of these states offer good comparison, allowing researchers to look at different models of development, and how these played out over the long-term. The book provides data on population growth and change, industrial and occupational structure, and the various shifts in what the economically active population did. It will be useful for historians, economists, development studies scholars and non-governmental organisations working on twentieth-century and contemporary southern Africa.

Prior to the outbreak of World War II, the British presided over the largest Empire in world history, a vast transoceanic and transcontinental realm of dominions, colonies, protectorates and mandates that covered over one-quarter of the world’s land mass and comprised a population of over 450-million subjects. Spanning Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania, over fifty modern nations—currently recognized by the International Olympic Committee—were governed and controlled by the British crown at some stage prior to the gradual dissolution of the Empire. The British World and the Five Rings seeks to explore the relationship between the former British Empire and the Olympic Movement. It pays due regard to the settler dominions, but it also addresses those territories who were less willing partners in the British imperial project. In doing so, the tendency of so-called ‘British World’ histories to promote an apologia for Empire is rejected in favour of a critical approach to imperialism. Combining thorough research with engaging and accessible writing, The British World and the Five Rings is applicable to many fields of Olympic scholarship making it a central work in the growing field of sports studies. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
