Scandinavia Since 1500 written by Byron J. Nordstrom and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-30 with History categories.

Though marked by certain geographical, linguistic, and cultural differences, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands are united by a common bond and a shared history. This history comes richly to life in this up-to-date and thorough account of modern Scandinavia. Structuring his history along the lines of traditional European chronology-Renaissance, Early Modern, Modern, and Contemporary periods-Byron J. Nordstrom brings a distinctly twentieth-century perspective to his work. He shows how religions, political ideas, economic practices, intellectual movements, and technological innovations have come to Scandinavia from abroad only to be modified and recast in a uniquely Nordic character. Among the many topics he examines are Gustav II’s military reforms, Danish absolutism, the constitutions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Scandinavian modern design, management techniques and shopfloor production strategies, and the welfare state. Surveying political, diplomatic, social, economic, and cultural aspects of the region’s history, Scandinavia since 1500 is a comprehensive yet nuanced portrait of this unique region.

"This volume celebrates the 40th anniversary of the journal American Studies in Scandinavia, which began publication in 1967. The first of a series of books that will bring together the distinctive scholarship of the Nordic Association for American Studies, it situates Scandinavian practices in relation to American Studies debates inside the US, where for a decade scholars argued about the shape and subject matter of the field. Is this a crisis in American Studies as a whole? Or is the problem largely confined to the United States? How is this interdisciplinary activity different in a Scandinavian context? These questions ultimately are about the field's direction and international coherence." "Beyond the crisis in US American Studies is an invitation to develop a dialogue across the Atlantic. For too long European scholars have watched Americanists in the United States as though looking through a one-way window, invisible to those arguing on the other side of the glass. For too long US Americanists have scarcely realized that what appeared a mirror could be a window."--BOOK JACKET.

Viking America written by Geraldine Barnes and has been published by Boydell & Brewer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with History categories.

Viking America examined through the writing and rewriting of the Vinland story from the middle ages to the twentieth century. The accounts in the Vinland sagas of the great voyages to the northeast coast of America in the early years of the eleventh century have often been obscured by detailed argument over the physical identity of the West Atlantic landwhich its Scandinavian discoverers named Vinland. Geraldine Barnes leaves archaeological evidence aside and returns to the Old Norse narratives, Groenlendinga saga (Saga of Greenlanders) and Eiriks saga rauda(Saga of Eric the Red), in her study of the writing and rewriting of the Vinland story from the middle ages to the late twentieth century. She sets the sagas in the context of Iceland's transition from paganism to Christianity; later chapters explore the Vinland story in relation to issues of regional pride and national myths of foundation in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America, to the ethos of popular imperialism during the same periodin English literature, and, in the late twentieth century, to postcolonial concerns. GERALDINE BARNES is associate professor of English, University of Sydney.
