This is a comprehensive survey of the Irish in all phases of their emigration, settlement, and life in North America. They are viewed under arms in the Indian wars, the Revolution, the War of 1812, and in the individual services; studied in their states as pioneers and prominent sons; studied as politicians and builders of the Republic; and studied and surveyed in multiple lists and biographies. They are analyzed as financiers, businessmen, and civil servants, and their contributions are explained in statistical analyses of their numbers in proportion to the population of America as a whole. Most important, they are treated as major figures-whether great or small-and the wonder is that a book of this size can treat so many. Hundreds upon hundreds of Irish-Americans are dealt with, from the first immigrants to Barbados in 1649 to the political refugees of the 1840s.

Irish history is often past and furious and nowhere more contentiously than when discussing religion. This book is designed to be read with equal profit by those who know a little and those who know a lot about the role of religion in Irish history. It moves at a fast pace, it is extensively illustrated with fresh images and maps, it draws on diverse evidence in multiple languages and it uses examples drawn from every county in Ireland. The volume covers commentators writing in Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Icelandic, Irish, Italian, Latin and Spanish. The focus is on the lived experience of real people in real places in real time, rather than on the abstractions of nationality, class and race. Because religion played such a decisive role in Irish life, the book is also an oblique-angle version of Irish history, conveying a sense of how we got to be where we are, even as we leave it behind.

The Restoration Land Settlement In County Dublin 1660 1688 written by Lawrence J. Arnold and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with History categories.

The Restoration land settlement in Ireland was one of the most significant events in the remarkable revolution in land ownership in the early modern period whereby the ownership of most of the land was transferred from Catholic to Protestant hands, and with it political and economic power. The settlement was regulated by two acts of parliament, the one familiarly known as the Act of Settlement (1662), the other the Act of Explanation (1665), both of which became the principal legal instruments upon which land tenure in Ireland was to rest for nearly two centuries. Yet the settlement has hitherto attracted the attention of relatively few historians, with the result that the subject has remained largely a blind-spot to many historians dealing with seventeenth-century Ireland. In this study Dr L. J. Arnold has attempted to resolve the uncertainties surrounding the settlement, using County Dublin as a case study.
