Shells have a mystique that transcends time. Shelled molluscs have existed since the beginning of the Palaeozoic era, an amazing half billion years ago. For thousands of years humans have been fascinated by the beauty and significance of shells. From the dawn of human history, people have combed beaches for nature's jewels of the sea and land - either answering an irresistible urge to discover perfect, beautiful specimens, or in the more noble cause of science. This book reproduces in facsimile, John Mawe's first shell collecting guide of 1804, together with his complete edition of 1821, The Voyager's Companion, or Shell Collector's Pilot. The modern reader can now follow this intrepid author along the coasts of North Africa and South America, sharing the pleasures of handling beautiful and rare shells gathered from shores lapped by the waters of the South Seas, learning how and where to collect shells and how best to preserve them. Readers will discover that even unprepossessing shells are worth picking up, that the inhabitants of faraway places were often puzzled why anyone should want to collect such seemingly common objects.

I have adored the exquisite collection of shells that my mother inherited from her grandfather's estate, when she was thirteen years old. As the new custodian of this unique treasure, I undertook the task of moving the collection from Tasmania to my new home on the Sunshine Coast. The resulting near-disaster turned out to be a blessing, as I discovered the pages of letters and newspapers hidden beneath the collection contained fascinating stories, and a history that was also my own. The documents captivated me and transported me back in time to the colonial era. The collection was started by the Reverend Joshua Tinson, an English Baptist missionary, who lived in Jamaica between 1822 and 1850. Following his death, his wife and daughter, Eliza, followed the path of my ancestors, and sailed across vast oceans to settle in Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land. Eliza Tinson gave her fathers collection to my great grandfather, Ernest Henry Pretyman, who was also an avid shell collector. 'Sharing Joy's Treasures' will take you on a wonderful journey through the history of this amazing collection.

Echoing with the sounds of the sea, an exquisite survey of the science and customs of conchs, clams, coquinas, cowries, and much more. Shells have captivated humans from the dawn of time: the earliest known artwork was made on a shell. As well as containers for food, shells have been used as tools, jewelry, decorations for dwellings, and to bring good luck or to ward off spirits. Many Indigenous peoples have used shells as currency, and in a few places, they still do. This beautifully illustrated book investigates the fascinating scientific and cultural history of shells. It examines everything from pearls—the only gems of animal origin—to how shells’ diverse colors and shapes are formed. And it reveals how shells have inspired artists throughout history, how shells have been used in architecture, and even how shells can be indicators of changing environmental conditions. Also including two essays by shell expert M. G. Harasewych, emeritus curator of gastropods in the Smithsonian’s Department of Invertebrate Zoology, Shells is an authoritative exploration of the deep human connection to these molluscan exoskeletons of sea, lake, land, and stream.

A Natural History Of Shells written by Geerat J. Vermeij and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Nature categories.

Geerat Vermeij wrote this "celebration of shells" to share his enthusiasm for these supremely elegant creations and what they can teach us about nature. Most other popular books on shells emphasize the identification of species, but Vermeij uses shells as a way to explore major ideas in biology. How are shells built? How do they work? How did they evolve? With these questions in mind, the author lucidly - and charmingly - demonstrates how shells give us insights into the lives of animals in our own day as well as in the distant geological past. As snails, clams, and other molluscs enlarge their shells, they inscribe a detailed record of the everyday events and unusual circumstances that mark their lives. Moreover, the fossil record that chronicles the history of life is replete with shells of extinct species. Vermeij draws on comparisons of shells from different parts of the world and from successive geological periods to argue that predators have played a decisive role in the evolution of shells. Architectural specialization, he argues, is dictated by the risks, rewards, costs, and benefits imposed by predators and competitors on shell-builders living in a dangerous world. This book will be of interest both to amateur shell collectors and to scholars, and its lively review of evolutionary history should prove especially appealing to a general audience.
