In A History of the Early Part of the Reign of James the Second, Charles James Fox presents a meticulous account of the tumultuous early years of King James II'Äôs reign in England, blending rigorous historical analysis with eloquent prose. Written in the late 18th century, this work emerges as a significant contribution to Whig historiography, emphasizing themes of liberty, governance, and the precarious balance of power. Fox'Äôs narrative deftly intertwines political events with a vivid portrayal of the societal implications of James's policies, thereby situating his chronicle within the broader context of the Enlightenment and the evolving British constitutional framework. Charles James Fox, a prominent Whig politician and orator, was known for his fierce advocacy of civil liberties and opposition to tyranny. His own experiences in political life, particularly during periods of contention with the monarchy, honed his insights into the complexities of governance and the consequences of absolutism. This background catalyzed his desire to illuminate the struggles of the past, imparting a sense of urgency to the lessons drawn from James II'Äôs controversial reign. Fox'Äôs work is a vital resource for scholars and enthusiasts of British history, offering deep insights into the intricacies of political power and the fight for democratic principles. James Ii written by John Miller and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.
James II (1633–1701) lacked the charisma of his father, Charles I, but shared his tendency to dismiss the views of others when they differed from his own. Failing to understand his subjects, James was also misunderstood by them. In this highly-regarded biography, John Miller reassesses James II and his reign, drawing on a wide array of primary sources from France, Italy, and Ireland as well as England. Miller argues that the king had many laudable attributes--he was brave, loyal, honorable, and hard-working, and he was at least as benevolent toward his people as his father had been. Yet James’s conversion to Catholicism fueled the distrust of his Protestant subjects who placed the worst possible construction on his actions and statements. Although James came to see the securing of religious freedom for Catholics in the wider context of freedom for all religious minorities, his people naturally doubted the sincerity of his commitment to toleration. The book explores James’s relations with the state and society, focusing on the political, diplomatic, and religious issues that shaped his reign. Miller discusses the human failings, the gulf of understanding between the king and his subjects, and the sheer bad luck that led to James’s downfall. He also considers the reasons for James’s lack of interest in recovering his kingdom after his flight to France in 1688. This revised edition of the book includes a substantial new foreword assessing recent work on the reign. “This is a first-class essay in historical biography. . . . It must displace all previous lives of James II.”—J. P. Kenyon, Observer

The "Diary of Samuel Pepys 'Äî Complete 1665 N.S" is a remarkable firsthand account of a pivotal year in 17th-century England, meticulously chronicling the daily life, politics, social norms, and significant events of the time. Written in a candid and often introspective style, Pepys's diary reveals the intricacies of his personal experiences amid the backdrop of the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. The diary'Äôs informal yet engaging tone offers readers a rare glimpse into the thoughts and feelings of a man navigating a city on the brink of catastrophe, making it an invaluable primary source for understanding this tumultuous period in British history.
