Every day is the anniversary of an event worth remembering, For example, on March 29, among many other events, the Puritans sailed for New England (1630), the Rosenbergs were found guilty of conspiracy (1951), and the House of Representatives completed congressional action on curtailing the farm subsidy program (1996). This book offers a look at important moments in American history day by day. Each day's entry lists events from the arrival of the first explorers through the end of 2006. Listed events relate to a wide range of topics, from politics to science to the social scene. Births and deaths of major figures are included. Readers can look under any day of the year and see hundreds of years' worth of the American past. Secretaries Of War And Secretaries Of The Army written by William Gardner Bell and has been published by U.S. Government Printing Office this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Cabinet officers categories.

Foreword: The Center Of Military History first published Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army: Portraits & biographical sketches in 1981 during the bicentennial of the American Revolution and the US Constitution. The book reflected two major themes of the Army's commemoration: the role of the soldier-statesmen of the revolution in the creation of our government and the constitutional principle of civilian control of the military. This updated printing continues to recognize those twin legacies. The first Secretaries of War were prominent members of the soldier-statesmen generation, and they and their successors have embodied the Founding Fathers' intent to ensure civilian leadership in military affairs. Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army is relevant to students and scholars in such diverse fields as military history, political science, American studies, and art and portraiture. We trust that this new edition will continue to be useful as background for the nomination of Army secretaries, as a handbook for the congressional armed services committees, and as a reference book throughout the Army. It has been a valuable source of information for libraries, and we hope that its distinctive perspective on the history of the Army will interest a new generation of the American public as well.

The Lynching Of Cleo Wright written by Dominic J. CapeciJr. and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-17 with History categories.

On January 20, 1942, black oil mill worker Cleo Wright assaulted a white woman in her home and nearly killed the first police officer who tried to arrest him. An angry mob then hauled Wright out of jail and dragged him through the streets of Sikeston, Missouri, before burning him alive. Wright's death was, unfortunately, not unique in American history, but what his death meant in the larger context of life in the United States in the twentieth-century is an important and compelling story. After the lynching, the U.S. Justice Department was forced to become involved in civil rights concerns for the first time, provoking a national reaction to violence on the home front at a time when the country was battling for democracy in Europe. Dominic Capeci unravels the tragic story of Wright's life on several stages, showing how these acts of violence were indicative not only of racial tension but the clash of the traditional and the modern brought about by the war. Capeci draws from a wide range of archival sources and personal interviews with the participants and spectators to draw vivid portraits of Wright, his victims, law-enforcement officials, and members of the lynch mob. He places Wright in the larger context of southern racial violence and shows the significance of his death in local, state, and national history during the most important crisis of the twentieth-century.

Hubertis M. Cummings vividly relates the tale of the sturdy and indomitable Scotch-Irish settlers in Pennsylvania. Hardened from their ancient battles against tyranny and injustice in their native "bonnie Scotland," they struggled to establish a new home in America along and beyond the Susquehanna River. Their passionate love of freedom and will to survive helped them make a life for themselves in a hostile frontier. Their deep faith and spirit would thrive in this region, as they helped to forge the identity and destiny a young nation.
