Rathlin Island has an aura of remoteness. It is only a few miles off the north coast of Antrim, and yet it is separated from the mainland by treacherous seas. Numerous shipwrecks have given the waters of Rathin Soun a reputation as a graveyard, and the island itself has a turbulent history to match. Today Rathin is a popular tourist destination, and the traveller is sure of a friendly welcome. On clear days in spring and summer the views along the dramatic coastline are stunning, wild flowers are everywhere, the cliffs are alive where seabirds and seals can often be seen.

Rathlin Island lies five miles off the north Antrim coast between Ireland and Scotland and although small has been occupied continuously since the Mesolithic period (c.7,000 years ago). In the past it has been fought over, bought and sold, raided and blockaded. From prehistoric communities, Celtic holy men, Vikings, Gaelic Scots to Tudor English, it is a story of settlement, trade, conquest and struggle. This publication presents the results of an archaeological survey of Rathlin Island commissioned by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency which took place from 2002 and 2007. The work forms part of a wider programme that includes surveys of the seabed, foreshore and coastal environments of Northern Ireland on behalf of the Agency. This survey provides an insight into the built heritage of Rathlin and the surveying of many sites that had not been previously recorded. The Agency's heritage work on the island will continue particularly in the light of new and improving geophysical survey techniques for the sea floor. This volume presents for now the fullest account of the island's long story

SHORTLISTED FOR THE ONSIDE NONFICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR 2018 The islands off the coast of Ireland have long been a source of fascination. Seen as repositories of an ancient Irish culture and the epitome of Irish romanticism, they have attracted generations of scholars, artists and filmmakers, from James Joyce to Robert O'Flaherty, looking for a way of life uncontaminated by modernity or materialism. But the reality for islanders has been a lot more complex. They faced poverty, hardship and official hostility, even while being expected to preserve an ancient culture and way of life. Writing in her 1936 autobiography, Peig Sayers, resident of Blaskets island, described it as 'this dreadful rock'. In 1841, there were 211 inhabited islands with a combined population of 38,000; by 2011, only 64 islands were inhabited, with a total population of 8,500. And younger generations continue to leave. By documenting the island experiences and the social, cultural and political reaction to them over the last 100 years, On the Edge examines why this exodus has happened, and the gulf between the rhetoric that elevated island life and the reality of the political hostility towards them.It uncovers, through state and private archives, personal memoirs, newspaper coverage, and the author's personal travels, the realities behind the "dreadful rocks", and the significance of the experiences of, and reactions to, those who were and remain, literally, on the very edge of European civilisation.

Thomas Cecil a native of Rathlin Island Born 25th May 1946. Fisherman, campaigner, writer, historian and diver, dedicated his life to preserving, researching and documenting the Maritime History around these shores. An active diver since the 1960's he spent his life exploring these wrecks: HMS Drake, Ella Hewitt, The Lochgarry, The Santa Maria, The Girvan, The Templemore, The Pintail, The Shackleton, The Bouncer, The Lugano, The Erlo Hills, The Arriero, The Taymouth Castle, He diligently researched the details of all the known wrecks over many years and published his findings in this book 'The Harsh Winds of Rathlin' He also won the admiration of Richard Branson for his rescue attempts on the 3rd July 1987 when his balloon 'The Virgin Flyer' ditched off the North Coast of the island at the end of his transatlantic crossing. He subsequently contributed £25,000 to the island as a reward for Tommy's efforts. He identified many wreck sites which were beyond the reach of divers with the equipment available in his lifetime. He promoted the rich diversity of the marine life found in amazingly clear unpolluted waters, as well as establishing Rathlin's International Dive Centre in 1991. This arreacted hundreds of divers from around the world every year, until his accidental death exploring the wreck of the 'Tuscania', ( an exceptionally deep dive) on the 21st September 1997. It was his ambition to retain for public enjoyment all the artefacts he recovered and to make his research papers available for the benefit of all who love the sea; working hard to maintain Rathlin's rich Maritime Heritage. ''Forgetting not to toll the bell, For those who lived and days are gone, Yet still have dreams And yarns to tell''
