Excerpt from A Critical History of Language and Literature of Ancient Greece, Vol. 3 Attention has already been directed in the pre vions book1 to the origin of lyric poetry, and to the causes which obtained for the Sister epic art, if not the palm of prior invention, a preference at least in respect to culture and preservation. It will now be proper to inquire into the circumstances to which, at a later epoch, the Lyric Muse was indebted, in her turn, for an equal share of honourable distinction. Excerpt from A History of the Literature of Ancient Greece, Vol. 3 of 3 We must now return to Athens, which had been the chief seat and centre of Greek literature during the second or classical period of its development, but had now, in all respects but one, resigned the leadership to the city of the Ptolemies. While Alexandria was producing the series of learned poets, acute grammarians, polyglot scholars, and original discoverers in mathematics and inductive science, which we have discussed in the two preceding chapters, Athenian literature was represented only by a chronicler or two, by a transient activity of the comic muse, and by the successive or contemporaneous establishment of certain forms of mental and moral philosophy, founded on the various Socratic schools which have been already traced to their origin. Excerpt from The Description of Greece, Vol. 3 of 3 Attic land: and the Flatasen ses are near the Eleutherenses. But the whole nation of the Boeotians derived its name from Boeotus, who they say was the son of Itonus, and the nymph Melanippe. They add, that Itonus was the son of Am phictyon. Many of their towns too are denominated from: men, but a still greater number from women. The Pla tmenses indeed were, as it appears to me, natives of Bmotia from the first; but they are of opinion that they derived their name from Plataea, the daughter of a river. It is, however, evident that the Platmenses reigned here in ancient times. For all Greece formerly was in subjection to royal authority, and there was no such thing as a democracy to be found among them. But the Plataeenses do not know any thing of their kings except Asopus, and Cithaeron who was prior to asopus: and they say that one of these gave a name to a mountain, and the other to a river. Excerpt from New Chapters in the History of Greek Literature, Vol. 3: Some Recent Discoveries in Greek Poetry and Prose of the Classical and Later Periods The first feeling with which readers will open this book will be that of regret at not seeing the name of Mr. Barber on the title-page. It has only been his engagement with the publica tion of other classical work which has prevented him from taking part in this Series; but the book owes very much to the advice which he gave in laying out the plan of it. It had not been the original purpose to treat Of earlier and standard authors, but the work grew under our hands; many reviewers also and other scholars desired that the record of the new literary discoveries should be made as complete as possible; and, as in the two previous Series, each contributor has treated his subject in his own way, subject to revision and discussion.
