Excerpt from A History of the Moravian Church For assistance in the preparation of this second edition, I desire herewith to express my obligations to several friends: To the late Rev. L.G. Hasse, B.D., whose knowledge of Moravian history was profound, and who guided me safely in many matters of detail; to the Rev. N. Libbey, M.A., Principal of the Moravian Theological College, Fairfield, for the loan of valuable books; to the Rev. J.T. Muller, D.D., Archivist at Herrnhut, for revising part of the Ms., and for many helpful suggestions; to Mr. W.T. Waugh, M.A., for assistance in correcting the proof-sheets, and for much valuable criticism; to the members of the Moravian Governing Board, not only for the loan of books and documents from the Fetter Lane archives, but also for carefully reading through the Ms.; to the ministers who kindly supplied my pulpit for three months; and last, but not least, to the members of my own congregation, who relieved me from some pastoral duties to enable me to make good speed with my task. Excerpt from A History of the Moravian Church in New York City Altho frequent references are made to the work of this church in various historical writings, no one has ever written a history of the Moravian Church in New York City. Believing that this mat ter was too long deferred, the Elders and Trustees of the First Church fraternally requested the present pastor to bring to light the valuable information locked up in the abundant manuscripts and records preserved in the archives of the congregation. Not without a feeling of unworthiness for so immrtant a task, the pastor began his labor of love, and now, after two years of careful research, this volume, entitled A History of the Moravian Church in New York City, is given to the public. The principal sources of information contained in the history. Are the diaries, records, and numerous papers found in the archives of the congregation. The Provincial Archives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, were also laid under contribution. Additional information was found in various books by Moravian authors, 'in numerous histories of New York, and in other litera ture bearing on the subject. If this history shall add to the appreciation of the value of Moravian labors in New York City and elsewhere, and inspire a deeper love for the Moravian Church, the writer will feel amply rewarded for his labors. Excerpt from History of the Moravian Church in Philadelphia: From Its Foundation in 1742 to the Present Time Were it for the mere pleasure of writing a book, or the evaporative fame of authorship, the contents of this volume would have slept in the unexplored bosom of its fathers yet there is a motive, a design, and a pleasure in the research, inasmuch as the lights and. Shades of antiquity may be elicited to refresh the memory of the centenarian, or enlighten the wonderings of the satchelled youth, or the full fledged collegian. There, is, however, in this, as there is doubtless in all communities, a portion of our race for whom obli vion would seem to have been permitted, who pass every yesterday of their existence, and that of their ancestors, as though Time had but just marked their being, and the everlasting now was the necessary absorbent of all that life holds dear. Excerpt from A Brief History of the Moravian Church, Vol. 1: A Series of Papers Prepared by Teachers of the Salem Home Sunday School for Use in the Classes But the Roman Church heard of their success, and determined to claim the work on the ground that the first introduction of Chris tianity into the country had come through its members. Cyrill and Methodius were summoned to Rome, but Pope Nicholas died before they arrived. His successor, Adrian II, thought it would be to'bis advantage to have Bohemia and Moravia comprise a diocese independent of both the German Bishops and the Greek Patriarch, and directly tributary to him, so he received the missionaries very graciously, approved of all they had done, and offered to make them Bishops. Cyrill, whose health was failing, declined the honor, and died a few weeks later, but Methodius promised him obedience, and was consecrated Archbishop of Pannonia, which was the ancient name of that diocese. He returned to Moravia, and under his guid ance the good work spread into Bohemia, and the first Christian church was built near Prague. The jealousy of the German bishops then became more intense, and they complained at Rome until Methodius was again called thither, and while he triumphantly vindicated his course the Pope ordered that the Gospels must be publicly read first in Latin and then in Slavonian, and a German suffragan, or assistant bishop, was appointed. From this small beginning the power of.the Roman Church increased until Bohemia and Moravia were entirely in their hands.
