Excerpt from World Power: The Empire of Christ Shattering the nest was preached in the City Tem ple, London, England, on Sunday morning, August ninth, the Sunday following Britain's entrance into the war. It was repeated to my own congregation on my return from England in September. The other sermons were delivered in the regular course of my ministry in Wal mer Road Church on the nine successive Sunday even ings of October and November. They were prepared from week to week, amid the pressing duties of a heavy pastorate. They are essentially spoken sermons, follow ing the extemporaneous method, and they are printed as they were spoken. In response to the wishes of my congregation each sermon was published in pamphlet form on the week following its delivery. These pam phlets have been gathered into this volume, with no attempt to rewrite them and little attempt to revise. While bearing in consequence many marks of literary imperfection they retain the form of direct spoken coun sels and evangelistic appeals. They were graciously blessed by the Holy Spirit in the conversion of men and women and they are sent out in this form only with the hope that they may prove of further blessing to a wider congregation. A continuous narrative is given in the text, with as much freedom from technical treatment as the subject allows; details and authorities are relegated to footnotes, and some special questions and difficulties are dealt with in notes appended to the several chapters. The chief aim which has been kept in View throughout has been to offer to the student of the history of Christian Doctrine during the first four centuries of the life of the Church such information with regard to the facts and the sources as will enable him to prosecute his study for himself. It is only a limited period with which the book deals, but a period in which the Christian theory of life - oi the relations between God, the World, and Man - was worked out in its chief aspects, and all the doctrines to which the Church of Christ as a whole is pledged were framed. Excerpt from History of the Christian Church From the Fourth to the Twelfth Century The prophecies of jesus christ regarding his Church,1 the pre Ago, 306, parations made by Him, prior to His ascension, for its establish ment,2 the causes of the opposition to which His religion was Introductory subjected during the earlier ages of the Church,3 the calumnies Remar with which His disciples were assailed, and the persecutions which they heroically and patiently endured} have already en gaged our attention. The recollection of these things, taken in connection with the preliminary observations concerning the ecclesiastical history of the fourth century contained in the im mediately preceding chapter, must have prepared the reader to expect some great change in the position of the Church. It had weathered a storm of great tribulations. The ten persecutors Nero, Domitian, Trajan, Antonine, Severus, Maximin, Decius, Valerian, Aurelian, and Diocletian - had almost exhausted the virulence of hate against it, but without success. And though treated by the Roman state as the off-scouring of all things,5 the Christians had asyet presented a noble spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men of steadfastness and patient endurance. Is the era of Christ nearly run, then? The maxim by which that may be decided Christians themselves have uttered, viz., for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought; but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow i Judged upon this principle, grandly impartial in its spirit, what opinion must we form regarding the future of the Church One would say - such persecution cannot much longer be withstood without the whole body of sufferers being looked upon as leagued revolters against the civil power, and thus bringing down upon themselves the whole force of the iron despotism of the State to subdue or exterminate them all; and then, faith failing, defections must multiply, and apostacies increase, till the power and influence of the new faith be diminished and, at last, utter and. Irretrievable disorganization must result in defeat and submission. In a con tention for mastery in the State, such a minority must succumb.
