Home geography does not restrict itself to present conditions alone, it concerns itself with the past. While it gives us a faithful picture of the present, it describes the local conditions of former times. In other words, it is not only an outlook into space but the starting point for history. The value of home geography lies in the fact that it enables the teacher to present concretely the geographical features of the vicin ity. With these features, thus Observed, as basal ideas, the learner can be taught by analogy to get a clear idea of such forms as do not come within his immediate experience. Excerpt from Home Geography Greater New York: Edition T his is the first of a 'series of geographies; the more advanced treatment deals at greater length with the world and its inhabitants. Since Part I of the present volume is a radical innovation, it perhaps needs an explanatory foreword. Necessity OF home geography. - The final basis for all study of geography is actual experience. Yet text books on that subject rarely treat Home Geography at all, and those that do, devote but few pages to it. This subject should, we think, receive far more careful attention. Excerpt from The Story of the City of New York Some details have been unavoidably omitted - an omission supplied in part by the chronological record in the Appendix. In treating of the modern period, the writer has adopted the view of most scholars, that history ceases fifty years back of the present time - contemporary record taking its place, - and has treated of the modern period only so far as seemed necessary to the completeness of the narrative. Excerpt from History of the City of New York, Vol. 1 The earliest record of the existence of the American Continent is found among the literary legacies of the Icelanders of the tenth century, who were superior to the continental people of that age both in mental vigor and physical endurance. But their discoveries were the result of hap hazard adventure rather than scientific probabilities, and their efforts at colonization were signal failures. From their geographical works we find that they supposed these western lands to be a part of Europe; and, while the accounts of their expeditions were carefully preserved, not a line was committed to parchment until many centuries had passed, so that there is very little reason for presuming that succeeding generations were materially benefited by reason of them.
