Nine nautical miles off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, strung along the middle arc of the Seribuat Archipelago, the roving eye will spot a clutch of sun-washed islands. Narrow the lens a little to focus on the middle island, Pulau Babi Tengah (or Middle Pig Island in the Malay language) named after the wild pigs that used to roam its lands. Set in the protected Johor Marine Park, the island, better known by its shortened name of Pulau Tengah, is three kilometres in circumference with an elevation of 150m at its highest point. Though just sixteen kilometres from the fishing town of Mersing, Johor, and 140km from Singapore, the island ticks every fantasy of an uninhabited paradise island. The beaches that encircle most of the island attract Green and Hawksbill turtles that land to lay their eggs from March to October. The translucent waters that surround the island are home to both coral reefs and meadows of sea grass which in themselves house rich marine life. Batu Batu sits on the southern end of the island and was built in the traditional Malaysian "kampung" or village style to blend into the natural landscape of the island. The resort aims to tread lightly in order to preserve the beauty of the island and its natural surroundings. To this end, Batu Batu has set up a variety of projects and funded a number of studies over the past years, including an ongoing collaboration with Malaysia's National Marine Parks Department and the Department of Fisheries for the conservation of turtles. This book sets out to document and share a broad overview of the natural history of Pulau Tengah. It is a dedication to the work of Batu Batu's staff and the various experts and nature lovers who have visited the island and contributed a little to its preservation. Tribal Communities In The Malay World written by Geoffrey Benjamin and has been published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-08-01 with Social Science categories.

The Malay World (Alam Melayu), spanning the Malay Peninsula, much of Sumatra, and parts of Borneo, has long contained within it a variety of populations. Most of the Malays have been organized into the different kingdoms (kerajaan Melayu) from which they have derived their identity. But the territories of those kingdoms have also included tribal peoples - both Malay and non-Malay - who have held themselves apart from those kingdoms in varying degrees. In the last three decades, research on these tribal societies has aroused increasing interest. This book explores the ways in which the character of these societies relates to the Malay kingdoms that have held power in the region for many centuries past, as well as to the modern nation-states of the region. It brings together researchers committed to comparative analysis of the tribal groups living on either side of the Malacca Straits - in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. New theoretical and descriptive approaches are presented for the study of the social and cultural continuities and discontinuities manifested by tribal life in the region.

A revered Apache spiritual and military leader and a recurring figure in pop culture lore, Geronimo was a key figure during the settlement of the American Southwest. He led one of the last major independent Indian uprisings and personified the struggle of Native Americans during westward expansion. Geronimo: A Biography explores the life of this legendary leader, a man who has become an icon of the courageous—and doomed—struggle of the Native Americans. This biography follows Geronimo's life from his traditional Apache upbringing to his final days as a celebrity prisoner of war. It discusses the historical and social forces at work during the period, including Native American traditions and lifeways. It also shows how Geronimo's surrender in 1886 marked the end of the traditional Native American way of life. No longer free to roam the lands of their forefathers, Indians faced a future of captivity and a struggle to maintain their identity and traditions.

Views on the dynamics of tropical forests are changing rapidly with the recognition that their environment is variable on the decadal to century scale. Fluctuating climatic conditions partly determine tropical forest structure, species composition and dynamics. Tropical communities are also highly contingent in space and time with respect to site and historical factors. Tropical forests have experienced to some degree this disturbance regime in the past, but climatologists are now predicting increasingly frequent extreme events in the new century. The combination of increasing deforestation and land-use conversion by man plus an increasingly variable environment means a situation that could be very difficult to manage.

This book is about the territorial dispute between Malaysia and Singapore over Pedra Branca, a small but strategically located island near the entrance to the Straits of Malacca. It describes how the two countries managed the dispute over three decades until final resolution by the International Court of Justice in May 2008. The two authors, who were personally involved in the case, recount the many twists and turns in the dispute as well as behind the scenes political and diplomatic manoeuvres. At a time when Asia still has numerous unresolved territorial disputes, the book would be of great interest to scholars, academics and practitioners in politics, international relations, history, diplomatic and legal circles.

The dugong (Dugong dugon) is the only herbivorous mammal that is strictly marine. It has a range spanning some 37 countries, including tropical and subtropical coastal and island waters. This plan presents a global overview of the status of the dugong and its management throughout its range. It contains information on dugong distribution and abundance, threatening processes, legislation, and existing and suggested research and management initiatives for the countries and territories in the dugong’s known range. It is hoped that the comparative information provided will enable individual countries to develop their own, more detailed, conservation plans.

Street names are a many-layered thing – crystallising various eras of history and celebrating multiple generations of people. As the federal capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur’s street names reflect its rich mix of cultures and its journey from colonial past to nationhood. This encyclopedic A-to-Z guide explains the meanings and origins of KL’s street names – those named after notable persons, after prominent landmarks, after local flora and fauna, etc. Themed street names within a particular area are also identified, e.g. the cluster of streets in Taman Sri Bahtera named after traditional Malay boats. Of particular interest is the renaming of streets over the years, ranging from literal translations (e.g. “Church Road” becoming “Jalan Gereja”), to completely new names (“Parry Road” to “Jalan P Ramlee”). Drawing on extensive research into the National Archives, the authors present their wealth of findings in a concise and easy-to-read way that will engage readers of all levels.
