Mansong od Dark Side Of DawnCharles Strang and Catrina Alvarez were born on the San Martin cattle estate in Jamaica. Charles is taken to England and Catrina was sent to her aunt in Spain. Years later ,Charles develops a yearning to visit his father, Sir Basil, whom he has not seen for some sixteen years. He resigns his commission as a colonel and arrives in Jamaica to be welcomed and entertained by his uncle, Major Bolton. Bolton informs him that San Martin estate, inherited by Sir Basil, is now joint-owned by the Spaniard, don Alvarez and Sir Basil. There is reunion with his sea-captain father , Sir Basil, but their reunion is short-lived. Basil is seriously ill with fever and deliriously insists on going to San Martin to dispossess Don Alvarez. Colonel Charles accompanies Sir Basil with the intention of protecting don Alvarez. On arrival at San Martin , Sir Basil instantly collapses and dies. Don Alvarez in a state of shock from the sudden death of his friend is taken to his bed. Colonel Charles immediately is forced to take control. Alvarez also dies shortly, after helplessly watching his slave rifling his room of jewellery, gold and a jewelled dagger. Charles is advised by his uncle to seek Catrina and marry her. There is a grand wedding at Seville, and Charles happily arrives in Jamaica with his beautiful bride. She is chagrined when Charles decides to convert San Martin into a sugar plantation. Charles converts the old San Martin Great House into a mansion and there is a hurricane. Catrina's aversion to slavery increases daily and her altercation with her husband over slavery is also increasing, Her dread and fears worsen after a meeting with a freed slave and Myal priest whose name is Mose. A runaway slave by the name of Mansong or Mausanga is wreaking havoc on the planters and and their families. About the same time , Catrina's daughter, Sarah, is born. Years later, an officer is murdered supposedly by Mansong at Sarah's coming -out party at the Great House. Catrina takes Catrina, who is traumatized by the young officer's death to England . She actively joined the anti-slavery movement. An intriguing twist to the story occurs when Catrina discovers that her maid , Rebelda , a slave girl she took with her, is pregnant for her husband. A mulatto girl is born, who is named Jemima and by paternity is the aunt of Sara-Lou, Catrina's white daughter. Years later, when Sarah -Lou goes to Jamaica , accompanied by her aunt, they go to the Great House to visit an old slave, Cubba-Lou, who due to Colonel Charle's drunken pecadillos, is the grandmother of Jemima. A little bit of inter- racial mixing here. Mansong has his own problems, as well as others. He murders his rival, Mata N'hungo, and is exiled from the village of refuge for runaway slaves ruled by Quamin who is the son of an Ashanti chief. Quashie is also seeking revenge for the murder of his half-brother Mata N'hungo. Mansong doesn't know that Quamin is his father, He later refuses to be chief of the village on the death of his father, That he is the son of the chief is never told to him by those who know. The story moves swiftly and dramatically to a denouement with the meeting of Sarah-Lou, Jemima and a slave master by the name of Mr.Winthrop. There is trouble in store for Mr. Winthorp. Sarah-Lou and her aunt know what is afoot, but Mr.Winthrop doesn't know.
