Anita Campbell has been telling herself that Jerome Scott is not dead. It's been thirty-two long and miserable years since her slave lover, and his other love, plunged to their deaths from Lover's Leap - a breathtakingly beautiful 1700 ft. cliff off Jamaica's south coast, after their secret and forbidden romance was discovered. Anita has vowed she'd never love another man, slave or free. But even in death, she can't forget Jerome, whose legacy is an illegitimate son Andrew, conceived during one of their many clandestine rendezvous with Jerome. Torn apart by the new reality of the abolition of slavery, a move she and Jerome had longed for, Anita is immersed deeper and deeper into her past. When Andrew decides to lobby for more rights for ex-slaves, an obligation he owes to his father's memory, Anita is forced to see life differently now, and she reluctantly crawls out of her despondency. First, she finds herself in church, consolation in God, and attraction to a young and handsome pastor. But the new life for Anita is not going to be easy. Just when Anita begins to challenge the vow she made with Jerome, she realizes she has competition - from the dead and from the living!

Punishing The Black Body written by Dawn P. Harris and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-01 with History categories.

Punishing the Black Body examines the punitive and disciplinary technologies and ideologies embraced by ruling white elites in nineteenth-century Barbados and Jamaica. Among studies of the Caribbean on similar topics, this is the first to look at the meanings inscribed on the raced, gendered, and classed bodies on the receiving end of punishment. Dawn P. Harris uses theories of the body to detail the ways colonial states and their agents appropriated physicality to debase the black body, assert the inviolability of the white body, and demarcate the social boundaries between them. Noting marked demographic and geographic differences between Jamaica and Barbados, as well as any number of changes within the separate economic, political, and social trajectories of each island, Harris still finds that societal infractions by the subaltern populations of both islands brought on draconian forms of punishments aimed at maintaining the socio-racial hierarchy. Her investigation ranges across such topics as hair-cropping, the 1836 Emigration Act of Barbados and other punitive legislation, the state reprisals following the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion in Jamaica, the use of the whip and the treadmill in jails and houses of correction, and methods of surveillance, policing, and limiting free movement. By focusing on meanings ascribed to the disciplined and punished body, Harris reminds us that the transitions between slavery, apprenticeship, and post-emancipation were not just a series of abstract phenomena signaling shifts in the prevailing order of things. For a large part of these islands’ populations, these times of dramatic change were physically felt.

Jamaica’s literary lion Colin Channer presents new fiction from the freshest young Jamaican authors and the Calabash International Literary Festival’s Extended Family. Reggae’s rebel spirit blazes in this hot selection of short fiction from Jamaica’s Calabash Writer’s Workshop. Set in the Caribbean and the USA, the stories sweep across a range of moods and genres to create a narrative LP of fascinating voices. From the old lady who gives a “how to” speech on beating children, to the schizophrenic singer who thinks he’s Bob Marley, to the hotel maid who gets a sexual offer that she can’t refuse, the diverse mix of characters are linked by the fundamental principle that all clichéd conventions must be shouted off the page. In the proudly odd tradition of Jamaican music, the selections seek to entertain while asking daring questions that provoke new ideas into being. New writing from: Colin Channer, Marlon James, Elizabeth Nunez, Kwame Dawes, Kaylie Jones, Geoffrey Philp, Rudolph Wallace, Konrad Kirlew, Alwin Bully, A-dziko Simba, and Sharon Leach.
