Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Excerpt from By-Ways of Nature and Life The chapters of this volume, having already appeared over the initials of the author in the columns of the New York Evening Post, need no formal introduction to the readers of that journal. To other readers, who see these sketches now for the first time, it may be explained briefly that they have been penned in out-of-the-way places of nature and life, during trips on two continents, extending over three years of time and some eighty thousand miles of distance. Often composed during the hurry of travel or of transitory sojourn, they must crave the reader's kindest indulgence for not a few errors of form and, it may be, some errors of fact. If, for the faults of the volume, any variety or freshness of its. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Wonders of Nature: As Seen and Described by Famous Writers The range is somewhat limited, for I have confined my self to the description of the grand, the curious and the awe-inspiring in nature, leaving the beauties of landscape for future treatment. Those who miss the Lakes of Kil larney or the vine-clad hills of the Rhine therefore will te member that in the following pages I have purposely neglected beautiful scenery. The professional traveller, by which I mean the emissary of a scientific society, appears very seldom here, because it is the effect produced rather than the topographical or de tailed description that I have sought. I hope this book will appeal to that large class of readers that takes pleasure in travelling by imagination, as well as to those who have actually seen the objects described and pictured here. Excerpt from The Adventures of a Nature Guide The individual interested in the world of outdoors, in many-sided natural history, finds entertainment everywhere in the wilderness, through all the seasons. Storm, sunshine, night, desert, stream, and forest are crowded with waiting attractions and moving scenes. To have the most adventures and the greatest enjoyment in a given time, ramble the wilds alone and without a fishing-rod or a gun. The rambler is free to wander afar and to enjoy the multitude of adventures that come thick and fast upon him. The wilderness being the safety zone of the world these experiences are likely to be less dangerous than staying at home. The hunter, however, armed and killing, multiplies dangers, and in giving his attention to game wanders but little and enjoys less variety and fewer adventures. The chapters in this book are filled with the experiences and adventures which came to me as a solitary and unarmed camper in the wilds of the continent. These and other experiences, together with inheritances not so tangible, produced definite results; I became a mountain climber and a peak guide. In doing this I developed nature guiding, that is, helping people to become happily acquainted with the life and wonders of wild nature.
