Excerpt from A Key to Modern British Poetry This book, now divided for the sake of convenience into essays, is not one which I would have written for choice. It was composed and delivered as a series of lectures on modern poetry during the course of my duties as a lecturer in English Literature attached to the British Council in Argentina during 1948. The present text, which has hardly been altered at all, is what typographers would call a 'mock-up' for the lectures which were designed to appeal to an audience of graduate teachers in English, gathered from the various universities of Argentina. Excerpt from The Modern Poets: An American-British Anthology Perspective, identify an allusion, turn a key that may help to make a first reading a comparatively full and easy one. Commentary cannot account for the ultimate values of any poem, but, by supplying points of information and {by suggesting interpretations, we can perhaps provide the bases on 'which these values may be discovered. We trust that most of the poems are self-contained and self explanatory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Beauties of Modern British Poetry: Systematically Arranged In attempting to trace its origin, we are left without the guidance of authentic history, and carried, as becomes its own divine and ethereal spirit, into the remote ages of hoary anti quity, and the boundless regions of the imagination. So far back, however, as authentic history does go, we find it existing in great perfection. The records of inspiration furnish us with specimens 'of Poetry, the most ancient which have come down to us. The greater part of the book of Job, unquestionably one of the most ancient compositions in the world, the Song of Moses and the Children of Israel on their deliverance from Pharaoh 'and the Red Sea, and the Song of Deborah, not to come farther down, exhibit specimens of Poetry which, inde pendently of their divine inspiration, are unrivalled for their p't1rit'y, beauty, and sublimity. Excerpt from Specimens of the British Poets: With Biographical and Critical Notices and an Essay on English Poetry With this, the Second Edition of these Specimens, their original Editor has had nothing to do, being prevented by 'other engagements from resuming the task of revising them. Various inaccuracies of the former edition have been removed in this, - some silently, for it had been burdening the book with use less matter to have retained them in the text, and pointed them out in a note, -while others, that entangled a thought or gave weight to it, have been al lowed to stand, but not without notes to stop the perpetuity of the error. With many of the now-discovered inaccuracies of the work in dates and mere minutiae, Mr. Campbell is not properly chargeable: some may be laid to the excursive nature of his task; others to the imperfect information of those days compared with ours, for we cannot have lived two-and-twenty years without important additions to our literary facts. Mr. Campbell's excellent taste in the selection of these Specimens has never been disputed; and of his Critical Disquisitions the best eulogy is in the fact that no work of any importance on our literary history has been written since they were published, without commendatory references to them; in particular, that they have been corrected and appealed to by Lord Byron, applaudingly quoted by Sir Walter Scott, and frequently cited and referred to by Mr. Hallam. The Oxford History Of Poetry In English written by Catherine Bates and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-31 with Literary Criticism categories.

The Oxford History of Poetry in English is designed to offer a fresh, multi-voiced, and comprehensive analysis of 'poetry': from Anglo-Saxon culture through contemporary British, Irish, American, and Global culture, including English, Scottish, and Welsh poetry, Anglo-American colonial and post-colonial poetry, and poetry in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, India, Africa, Asia, and other international locales. The series both synthesises existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge research, employing a global team of expert contributors for each of the volumes. Sixteenth-Century British Poetry features a history of the birth moment of modern 'English' poetry in greater detail than previous studies. It examines the literary transitions, institutional contexts, artistic practices, and literary genres within which poets compose their works. Each chapter combines an orientation to its topic and a contribution to the field. Specifically, the volume introduces a narrative about the advent of modern English poetry from Skelton to Spenser, attending to the events that underwrite the poets' achievements: Humanism; Reformation; monarchism and republicanism; colonization; print and manuscript; theatre; science; and companionate marriage. Featured are metre and form, figuration and allusiveness, and literary career, as well as a wide range of poets, from Wyatt, Surrey, and Isabella Whitney to Ralegh, Drayton, and Mary Herbert. Major works discussed include Sidney's Astrophil and Stella, Spenser's Faerie Queene, Marlowe's Hero and Leander, and Shakespeare's Sonnets.

A review of his first volume in London Society stated We have in our hands, one of the sweetest books of verse, to which we have ever given a repeated and delighted perusal, in Wood Notes and Church Bells, by the Rev. Richard Wilton. To many, many of these poems will be familiar, as one or two have been printed in the Times, and others have also had an extensive circulation. Mr. Wilton's 'mastery of the Sonnet - the true Italian Sonnet - one central thought set in owing harmonious numbers, - is especially observable.
