Someone you know or even love is the person who will kill you. Usually, that's true. But that is not what happened in 2018 to two college students in Iowa. Two young women who had everything to live for, were killed by two men with nothing to lose. Completely random attacks. Neither case had anything else in common except they both shocked the nation and even the world. What's worse, being murdered by a loved one or a stranger who jumps out of the bushes when you are most vulnerable? Previously published as We'll Find You and Let's Do Murder, The Iowa Murders tells the shocking true crime stories of the senseless deaths of Mollie Tibbetts and Celia Barquin Arozamena. When Mollie Tibbetts disappeared on July 18, 2018, her mother, Laura Calderwood, promised she would never quit searching. For five weeks in the summer of 2018, she searched, and the whole world watched Brooklyn, Iowa because this was more than a murder story - it also became one of the top political stories of 2018. Then, just after her killer led police to Mollie's body, hidden in a cornfield, news of another shocking, senseless homicide came from Iowa. Celia Barquin Arozamena was ready to begin the next phase of her life, including a professional career and marriage. Collin Richards only wanted a woman to rape and murder. Celia had everything to live for, and Collin had nothing to lose. They would come together one day in September 2018. Only one would survive. The Iowa Murders is the shocking true crime story of two communities and two families coming to grips with the worst crime imaginable, knowing that even if the killer's put behind bars today, another could be waiting tomorrow. The Iowa Murders: A Shocking True Crime Story is a heartbreaking, gripping, page-turning thriller that you won't want to miss.

Ever wonder what evil lurks in your hometown? Spine-Chilling Murders in Iowa takes you behind the scenes of some old-time killings in Iowa. Nettie Schwab married Jerome Hoot in Kansas City in 1899. When she woke up on the second day of her honeymoon, she found him bending over her, holding a handkerchief laced with chloroform close to her face. Another time, Hoot tried to drug her with a tablet, but she spit it out when he wasn’t watching. Not long after that, she received an infernal machine in the mail. The Saturday Night Murderer butchered eight people overnight in the sleepy little town of Villisca in June 1912. Investigators believed the killer rode the rails into town, then once his bloody work was done, hopped back on the train. “Tonight, I’m going to hold up the Handy Store,” bragged Floyd Sheets. “If there is any resistance, someone is going to be filled with lead. So, watch tomorrow evening’s papers if you think I’m kidding.” Sure enough, he killed the owner’s son at the Davenport, Iowa grocery store. No one was particularly surprised when they learned Earl Throst killed schoolmarm Inga Magnusson near Dorchester, Iowa, in 1921. When captured, Throst told detectives he planned to marry Magnusson the following week even though she was engaged to another man. Myrtle Cook’s death contained all the elements of a good murder mystery—rum runners, and an estranged husband who fumbled some of the details of his alibi. Cook, age 51, was shot to death in her Vinton, Iowa home on September 7, 1925. Read them if you dare!

On the night of December 1,1900, Iowa farmer John Hossack was attacked and killed while he slept at home beside his wife, Margaret. On April 11, 1901, after five days of testimony before an all-male jury, Margaret Hossack was found guilty of his murder and sentenced to life in prison. One year later, she was released on bail to await a retrial; jurors at this second trial could not reach a decision, and she was freed. She died August 25, 1916, leaving the mystery of her husband's death unsolved. The Hossack tragedy is a compelling one and the issues surrounding their domestic problems are still relevant today, Margaret's composure and stoicism, developed during years of spousal abuse, were seen as evidence of unfeminine behavior, while John Hossack--known to be a cruel and dangerous man--was hailed as a respectable husband and father. Midnight Assassin also introduces us to Susan Glaspell, a journalist who reported on the Hossack murder for the Des Moines Daily, who used these events as the basis for her classic short story, " A Jury of Her Peers", and the famous play Trifles. Based on almost a decade of research, Midnight Assassin is a riveting story of loneliness, fear, and suffering in the rural Midwest.

On a February night in 1897, the general store in Walford, Iowa, burned down. The next morning, townspeople discovered a charred corpse in the ashes. Everyone knew that the store’s owner, Frank Novak, had been sleeping in the store as a safeguard against burglars. Now all that remained were a few of his personal items scattered under the body. At first, it seemed to be a tragic accident mitigated just a bit by Novak’s foresight in buying generous life insurance policies to provide for his family. But soon an investigation by the ambitious new county attorney, M. J. Tobin, turned up evidence suggesting that the dead man might actually be Edward Murray, a hard-drinking local laborer. Relying upon newly developed forensic techniques, Tobin gradually built a case implicating Novak in Murray’s murder. But all he had was circumstantial evidence, and up to that time few murder convictions had been won on that basis in the United States. Others besides Tobin were interested in the case, including several companies that had sold Novak life insurance policies. One agency hired detectives to track down every clue regarding the suspect’s whereabouts. Newspapers across the country ran sensational headlines with melodramatic coverage of the manhunt. Veteran detective Red Perrin’s determined trek over icy mountain paths and dangerous river rapids to the raw Yukon Territory town of Dawson City, which was booming with prospectors as the Klondike gold rush began, made for especially good copy. Skull in the Ashes traces the actions of Novak, Tobin, and Perrin, showing how the Walford fire played a pivotal role in each man’s life. Along the way, author Peter Kaufman gives readers a fascinating glimpse into forensics, detective work, trial strategies, and prison life at the close of the nineteenth century. As much as it is a chilling tale of a cold-blooded murder and its aftermath, this is also the story of three ambitious young men and their struggle to succeed in a rapidly modernizing world.

When most people think of Iowa, their minds conjure up pigs, cornfields, and crotchety old farmers. But ax murders, mass killings, and ghostly sightings - those atrocities are reserved for big cities like Chicago or LA, not a little burg like Villisca, Iowa - population 2,000. People refuse to believe that a hundred years ago, every eye in the nation turned to Villisca, Iowa where eight people were butchered in their sleep by a madman using only an ax. Attention quickly turned to the Reverend Lyn Kelley, "a queer, strange, little preacher man," often accused of window peeping. The police forced a confession from him. Kelley said he was walking by the Moore house when a voice commanded him to, "Go in. Slay utterly." What could he do? He climbed the stairs and slaughtered the children. "Slay utterly. Suffer the little children." Back downstairs, he went into the parent's bedroom. "More work yet. There must be sacrifices of blood." Again, the ax did its work. In another downstairs bedroom, he discovered the Stillinger girls, asleep in their beds. "More work still." The ax resumed its work. Eight people were dead. The ax was satisfied. When Kelley recanted his confession, investigators turned their attention to Senator Frank Jones. Old-timers hinted there had been bad blood between Jones and Joe Moore (the deceased) ever since Moore left his position at Jones' farm implement store and opened the local John Deere dealership. Another rumor had it; Joe Moore was sleeping with Albert Jones' wife. But that theory didn't hold water, either. Reports linked Dona Jones to half the men in Villisca. Detectives developed dozens of others suspects over the years, but none of them panned out. The Villisca Ax Murders remain Iowa's most famous cold-case file. Gruesome Iowa is a collection of true-life stories - most of them rescued from old newspaper accounts published over 100 years ago. Only a few of the events in this book - such as the Villisca Ax Murders have ever made it into print. Except maybe in musky-old county histories. Even then, they are lucky to rate a paragraph. Read them now, if you dare!

The true crime author of Body of Proof investigates the case of an Iowa woman charged with murder for killing her abusive husband. Scott and Dixie Shanahan lived in a gray ranch along Third Avenue in the sleepy Midwestern town of Defiance, Iowa. With a population of less than 400, everyone in Defiance knew the home for its recurring episodes of screaming, mayhem, and horrific domestic violence. Then one day, Scott Shanahan was gone. Some thought the abusive husband had packed his bags and left town. After months went by with still no sign of the volatile wife beater, people began to ask questions. But what really happened to him was so shocking that even long-time law enforcement officials were aghast by the sight and awful smell. When Dixie was arrested for Scott’s murder, she made a credible claim of self-defense. But how did she manage to live with her husband’s rotting body inside her master bedroom for fourteen months? In Dixie’s Last Stand, investigative journalist John Ferak explores a tragic tale of marital abuse to ask: did Dixie Shanahan deserve to be convicted of murder?

“Fantastic . . . Sheds new light on the case . . . No stone is left unturned . . . Provides a remarkable snapshot of life in Cedar Rapids in the late 1940s” (The Gazette). Byron C. Hattman sealed his fate when he checked into the Roosevelt Hotel on December 13, 1948. A maid found his body in a blood-spattered room two days later. An investigation linked him to the young wife of St. Louis pediatrician Robert C. Rutledge, who confessed to the brutal attack after trying to poison himself. The scandal made national headlines and seemed like an easy case for the Linn County court. That is, until new evidence changed the story completely. Reporter and author Diane Fannon-Langton uncovers the truth and compiles the complete details of the Hattman slaying for the first time. Includes photos!
