Wittgenstein et Spinoza construisent, l'un dans le Tractatus, l'autre dans l'Éthique, des systèmes philosophiques réunissant le monde, l'homme et Dieu dans lesquels ils s'opposent sur de nombreux points. C'est ainsi par exemple que, suivant Spinoza, l'homme est assuré que rien ne se produit sans cause alors que Wittgenstein rejette la possibilité de rapports d'ordre causal entre les événements. Le présent travail dissèque dans une première partie l'œuvre de Wittgenstein, il analyse dans une deuxième partie la doctrine de Spinoza, et il compare enfin dans la troisième partie les deux systèmes dont il fait ressortir les points de concordance et de dissemblance dans leurs constructions respectives. Il traite les œuvres philosophiques que sont le Tractatus et l'Éthique comme si elles relevaient de sciences telles que la mécanique, l'astronomie, etc., et utilise des modèles géométriques appropriés à leur interprétation. L'étude comparative du Tractatus et de l'Éthique, qui ne cessent d'exercer leur influence sur la pensée humaine, permet de conclure que le Tractatus, œuvre du XXe siècle, renoue avec le rationalisme du XVIIe siècle exprimé par Spinoza.

Maurice Gross, who died in December 2001, was a pioneer and leading thinker in the field of modern linguistics. Long before computers could facilitate large-scale, lexically-based language study, he and his team began building an exhaustive, empirically-based inventory of the "lexicon-grammar" of French which, thirty years later, still remains the most complete syntax-based lexicon available. Researchers all over the world have adopted the Gross model of description, which serves as a computational model for any language. As can be seen in the contributions in this volume, it has been applied to languages as different as Arabic, Chinese, English, Greek or Korean (as well as the major Romance languages, of course). In this volume the reader will also find a number of articles by eminent linguists who were close friends of Maurice Gross, and frequently in dialogue with him on linguistic issues. No matter whether they shared his theoretical views, or his particular empirical methods of description, they each had great respect for his work, especially for the close-grained linguistic analysis which has set a benchmark for future generations.

Within the current discussion on grammatical interfaces, the word-classes of adjective and adverb are of particular interest because they appear to be separated or joined in manifold ways at the level of word-class or syntax, with morphology playing a prominent role, especially in Romance. The volume provides typological and theoretical insights into the common or different usage of adjectives and adverbs in Romance. Diachronic change is discussed alongside with synchronic variation and the representation in grammar. This volume explores a basic question in the historiography of art: the extent to which iconology was a homogenous research method in its own immutable right. By contributing to the rejection of the universalizing narrative, these case studies argue that there were many strands of iconology. Methods that differed from the ‘canonised’ approach of Panofsky were proposed by Godefridus Johannes Hoogewerff and Hans Sedlmayr. Researchers affiliated with the Warburg Institute in London also chose to distance themselves from Panofsky’s work. Poland, in turn, was the breeding ground for yet another distinct variety of iconology. In Communist Czechoslovakia there were attempts to develop a ‘Marxist iconology’. This book, written by recognized experts in the field, examines these and other major strands of iconology, telling the tale of iconology’s reception in the countries formerly behind the Iron Curtain. Attitudes there ranged from enthusiastic acceptance in Poland, to critical reception in the Soviet Union, to reinterpretation in Czechoslovakia and the German Democratic Republic, and, finally, to outright rejection in Romania. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual studies, and historiography.

L'institutionnalisation et l'organisation d'un ordre juridique sur un mode représentatif impliquent un processus de différenciation fonctionnelle entre représentés et représentants permettant la réduction de la multiplicité à l'unité. La personne morale apparaît comme le terme réunificateur de tout système representative. Dans l'ordre international, ce processus est perturbé par la présence, dans les organs intergouvernementaux, de représentants d'Etat qui sont autant d'organes des Etats membres, présence prolongée par le consentement aux actes adoptés en leur sein. Quel en est donc le sujet d'imputation : l'organisation ou ses membres ? Une théorie de l'acte doit être développée au coeur de la théorie de l'organe pour démontrer que l'organisation internationale est la personnification juridique d'une collectivité d'Etats dotée d'un système représentatif, et n'est que cela. La qualité de partie à un traité constitutif et de membre d'une organisation internationale ne prive l'Etat d'aucun des attributs de la souveraineté dans l'ordre international. Au contraire, la faculté d'investir un sujet de droit de compétences nouvelles est précisément un attribut de la souveraineté : l'organisation est tout entière une création des Etats membres. Leur souveraineté n'inhibe pas le processus de personnification de l'organisation qui, en retour, ne la confisque pas : la souveraineté et la relativité des rapports juridiques demeurent les principes régulateurs de l'ordre international.
