Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Qualitative analysis is of use to the pharmacist in testing chemicals for identity and purity. The study of the subject is also Of value because Of the practical knowledge of chemicals and chemical processes acquired by the student, and because it gives training in careful observation and develops the reasoning powers as they are exercised in the interpretation of results. This Manual was prepared as a guide for the author's own classes, and the objects sought are to acquaint the student with the general methods Of qualitative analysis and to prepare him to carry out such qualitative tests as the pharmacist may be called upon to make. The course is arranged to include one hour of lecture, one hour of recitation and about three hours of laboratory work per week for one school year. Practice on the analysis of unknown solutions is provided for throughout the course. This is important, as it not only increases the interest of the student in the work but also develops his self-reliance by constantly putting him upon his own responsibility in doing his work and in interpreting his results. The introductory section on the theory Of chemistry may be omitted if it is not necessary for the class to study or review this part of the subject. The Manual is in no sense a reference book, and in general only those things are included that are needed as a guide for the labora tory work, or which may easily be learned in connection with this work. A standard reference book on qualitative analysis will be Of great service while taking the course, and such a reference book is indispensable for anyone who is to pursue the-subject further. It is the outgrowth of several years' experience with students registered in the varied courses of a university curriculum. The aim in the prep aration of the book has been to systematize the work as much as possible, yet to avoid encouraging rule of thumb work in the laboratory. Our viewpoint has been to give a sufficient number of well-organized characteristic reactions accompanied by appropriate questions to stimulate and encourage analytical thinking. The attempt is made to bring out the value of differential behavior toward reagents early so that the student has at the commencement of his qualitative study an idea of the ultimate application of the reactions. M. Babcock, and the Notes on Chemical Analysis, by himself alone; he has added thereto much matter on qualitative analysis, all of Parts III and IV on quantitative analysis, and nearly all of Part V. Of course no such work as this can be satisfactorily prepared without frequent reference to the standard treatises of Prescott and Johnson, and of Fresenius, in one of which the whole subject of qualitative analysis is very thoroughly treated, and in the other both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The author would acknowledge his indebtedness to these works, while claiming for himself at least some novelty in the arrange ment of the matter, as well as in some of the matter itself, in this attempt to prepare a book that is much needed in his own laboratory.
