Architecture is an experience – with the intellect and with all our senses, in motion, and in use. But in order to actually discuss and assess it with relevance, a clarification of terms is essential in order to avoid the vagueness that often prevails when talking about architecture. This dictionary provides a vocabulary that allows the architecture discourse to go beyond the declaration of constructive relationships or the description of architectonic forms in familiar terms like “roof,” “base,” “wall,” and “axis” or “proportion”. The point is to describe the experience of architecture: how exactly does it contribute to the experience of a situation? For instance, the staging of an entrance situation, or the layout and visitor routes through a museum. From “context,” through “guidance,” “readability,” “patina,” “spatial structure,” “symmetry” and “tectonics,” to “width” (and “narrowness”) or “window,” the most important terms in architectural language are explained precisely and in detail.

Excerpt from A Glossary of Terms Used in English Architecture This little book is limited to the historical aspect of Architecture, and only deals incidentally with words used in art and art criticism and in building. But at the same time many technical terms are to be found, and constructional terms in particular; for construction lies at the very root of the matter. More attention than is usual in books of this kind is devoted to that part of the subject which bears on social and religious life. Thus more space is given to houses and churches and proportionately less to purely architectural terms such as capitals and vaults. Definitions are in most cases unnecessary; they are sometimes given, as in arch, because it is interesting to work out a definition; and this particular instance, by the by, illustrates the importance I attach to construction. Derivations are given where they are illuminating or curious. When there has been a choice the most familiar word or form of word has generally been adopted without much regard to philology on the one hand or to medieval use or monkish slang on the other. Many terms used in Greek and Roman architecture are included because they are necessary to a proper understanding of Renaissance architecture and church-building. For this reason the general principle has been to include those terms which have a direct bearing on English architecture, whether they deal with decorative forms or with the planning of buildings. Dictionary of Architecture Place this useful little dictionary in your library if you want a handy source for the spelling, pronunciation (if unusual), and concise definition of terms met in the study, historical reading, and practice of architecture. Fashioned over a ten-year period by one of America s leading architects, the Dictionary can be used by architects, students, builders, and building lovers from savant to sidewalk supervisor. Verb, adjective, and adverb forms are usually omitted when the noun is listed, to save space and reader time. Only those technical terms from other fields that have a real bearing on architecture are included. Illustrations are restricted to objects that are difficult or impossible to describe in words alone. These are grouped in plates at the end of the dictionary. Phonetic spelling is used for unusual words rather than the shower of diacritical symbols which often discourages users of giant lexicons. From abaciscus to zwinger, the Dictionary of Architecture serves as a modest aid to those who would know the vocabulary of this mother of the arts.

In light of today’s extensive use of digital communication, this volume focuses on how to understand and manage the various types of linguistically-based products that facilitate the use and extraction of information. Including conceptual and terminological databases, digital dictionaries, thesauri, language corpora, and ontologies, they all contribute to the development and improvement of language industries, such as those devoted to automatic translation, knowledge management, knowledge retrieval, linguistic data analysis, and so on. As the theoretical background underlying these applications is outlined in detail in the earlier chapters of the book, the reader is able to establish the necessary links between the various but related kinds of linguistic –and, in particular, semantic– applications. A general review of several theories and linguistic models that influence the practical application of Meaning studies to the new technologies is also included. This book is aimed at students and researchers of Linguistics, as well as those with a basic knowledge of Linguistics and Semantics who are interested in the on-going development of the handling of meaning and its practical usage
