Slave Emancipation And Transformations In Brazilian Political Citizenship written by Celso Thomas Castilho and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-03 with History categories.

Celso Thomas Castilho offers original perspectives on the political upheaval surrounding the process of slave emancipation in postcolonial Brazil. He shows how the abolition debates in Pernambuco transformed the practices of political citizenship and marked the first instance of a mass national political mobilization. In addition, he presents new findings on the scope and scale of the opposing abolitionist and sugar planters' mobilizations in the Brazilian northeast. The book highlights the extensive interactions between enslaved and free people in the construction of abolitionism, and reveals how Brazil's first social movement reinvented discourses about race and nation, leading to the passage of the abolition law in 1888. It also documents the previously ignored counter-mobilizations led by the landed elite, who saw the rise of abolitionism as a political contestation and threat to their livelihood. Overall, this study illuminates how disputes over control of emancipation also entailed disputes over the boundaries of the political arena and connects the history of abolition to the history of Brazilian democracy. It offers fresh perspectives on Brazilian political history and on Brazil's place within comparative discussions on slavery and emancipation.

Narratives Against Enslavement From The Court Rooms Of Nineteenth Century Brazil written by Clara Lunow and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-31 with History categories.

This book examines the enslavement system in nineteenth-century Brazil, demonstrating the strategies that lawyers and plaintiffs used to fight for freedom in court. In nineteenth-century Brazil, countless enslaved and freed women and men appealed to court to claim their right to freedom or that of family members. Taken as a whole, these legal suits create a narrative against the institution of slavery. By analyzing 30 individual cases (1810–1881) from various parts of imperial Brazil, this book demonstrates the intricate strategies of argumentation that lawyers and plaintiffs conceived to prove the right to freedom of the parties involved and to convince the authorities of it. Enslaved persons did not only protest their enslavement through rebellion, flight, refusal to work, and in everyday life but also produced a statement in the legal sphere against enslavement. This intellectual achievement was realized through the cooperation of lawyers and enslaved plaintiffs alike, functioning through stories of injustices, not through theoretical treatises on the right to liberty. While research on abolition in Brazil has concentrated mainly on public discourse, legislative decrees, and protest actions, this book focuses on the discursive space of courts. It gives both an overview of the enslavement system and intricately analyzes the fight for freedom in court. Narratives of Enslavement is the perfect volume for both students and nonspecialist readers and also provides new insights for specialists in this field.

In 1955, Argentina was divided onto those in favour and those against the government of Juan D. Perón. His policies in the preceding years, against his opponents, and a deteriorating economy lead to an attempt to overthrow him on 16 June 1955 in a bloody rebellion which included the only heavy bombing in history of a Latin American city. Aircraft from the Navy and the Air Force bombed the Casa Rosada and other buildings, in an attempt to kill Perón and support the advance of a Marine force from the Navy Headquarters, just 150 meters from the Casa Rosada. The failure to gain the support of compromised Army units and the heavy resistance faced by the Marines ended with the rebellion by sunset. This failed attempt was followed by a successful one three months later, which ended the government of Peron after some days of heavy fighting. Starting on 16 September, units of the three armed forces initiated a rebellion, now in different parts of the country and with greater support. Heavy fighting followed, with bombing missions by the Air Force and Naval Aviation, including Avro Lincolns, while the Navy ships bombarded the city of Mar del Plata and blockaded the Rio de la Plata. Ground combat took place in some of the main cities of the country, though on this occasion Buenos Aires avoided the fighting. After six days, the rebels had won and Peron was exiled to Paraguay.
