In the present reissue errors have been corrected, the bibliographies have been brought up to date, and some additions of importance have been made to the bibliographical information. I hope that, with the additions and corrections that are now incorporated into the text or notes, the volumes embodies the results of all recent researches into Shakespeare's life, or into the biographical or bibliographical aspects of his work, about which the student of the poet's biography is entitled to expect information from the poet's biographer. A few references to Shakespeare have lately come to light for the first time in contemporary manuscripts. I have not found it practicable to note these discoveries in detail in the body of the revised book without disturbing the balance of the chapters. It is not difficult to assign a reason for this preference, for, although the higher branches of criticism are undoubtedly more important, perhaps, even, when fully understood, more interesting and attractive, biographical disquisitions have the advantage of being readily appreciated by all; and, as Shakespeare was the most eminent genius the world has ever produced, it is not surprising that details of his existence, information of his reality when he lived and moved as one of ourselves, should be sought for with so much avidity. We should also recollect that minute historical researches never appear to so great advantage, nor are they productive of so much utility, as when they tend to unfold the private actions and characters of those great men whose deeds or works have exercised beneficial influences on the progress of mankind. The aim of the volume is to present, in language as terse and definite as possible, the net results of trustworthy research respecting Shakespeare's life and writings. In regard to topics of controversy the author confines himself to a statement of his final conclusions, and ventures to refer to the unabbreviated editions of the book all who desire to examine the grounds on which those conclusions are based. The footnotes in the larger editions give ample references to original authorities and discuss in detail points of doubt and difficulty; but although these footnotes are now omitted, the more pertinent pieces of illustrative information which they contain are incorporated in the present text. Excerpt from Sir Sidney Lee's New Edition of a Life of William Shakespeare: Some Words of Criticism Whereunto I would crave leave to suggest, in the first place, that any question of this kind, if such there be, must be decided not by "authority" but by evidence and argument. But, secondly, may not the "sceptics" fairly retort that there are certain literary writers who, though they undertake to instruct us concerning Shakespeare's knowledge of law, "lack the required" legal "training to give their work on the subject any genuine authority"? Upon this latter point I would ask permission to say a few words. "Lord Campbell," writes Sir Sidney Lee, "who greatly exaggerated Shakespeare's legal knowledge in his Shakespeare's Legal Acquirements (1859), was the first writer to insist on Shakespeare's personal connection with the law." Now Lord Campbell, as everybody knows, was Lord Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench, and, subsequently, Lord Chancellor. Whether or not he "greatly exaggerated Shakespeare's legal knowledge" is, I venture to suggest, a question which can hardly be decided with "any genuine authority" by a literary man without legal training.
