Jason Schmidt wasn't surprised when he came home one day during his junior year of high school and found his father, Mark, crawling around in a giant pool of blood. Things like that had been happening a lot since Mark had been diagnosed with HIV, three years earlier. Jason's life with Mark was full of secrets—about drugs, crime, and sex. If the straights—people with normal lives—ever found out any of those secrets, the police would come. Jason's home would be torn apart. So the rule, since Jason had been in preschool, was never to tell the straights anything. A List of Things That Didn't Kill Me is a funny, disturbing memoir full of brutal insights and unexpected wit that explores the question: How do you find your moral center in a world that doesn't seem to have one?

Do you get the feeling that the most popular trend in faith circles is to abandon faith altogether? Are you wooed by the voices inviting you to deconstruct Christianity? If you're tempted to leave the faith of your youth, you're part of a growing crowd. But if you're questioning the questions, you're not alone either. Joshua Porter has been there and back again. Now he's sharing the rollercoaster story of deconstruction in his characteristically thoughtful--and unconventional--voice. Buckle in and get ready for a ride that will both take your breath away and restore your heart. "A heart-wrenchingly honest account from someone who deconstructed and returned to tell the tale. This lived experience ensures that this book is a compassionate guide for those wrestling with their faith--faith that has been warped by the American culture, dented by doubt, and hurt by hypocrisy." --Mark Sayers, author of Reappearing Church and A Non-Anxious Presence "Deliciously dark, blisteringly honest, and funny . . . Like the best art, this book will provoke, not placate; ruffle your feathers, not soothe them; work you up, not calm you down." --John Mark Comer, New York Times best-selling author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry and Live No Lies "One thing we need a lot more of in our current moment is wise, thoughtful, and pastoral voices stepping into the main conversations we are all having. Josh is one of those voices and this book is one of those conversations." --Jefferson Bethke, New York Times best-selling author of To Hell with the Hustle "Josh writes as an insider, a wrestler with God, church, life, all of it--which makes his voice not just unique but credible. If you're going on a journey through your own deconstruction you need a credible guide . . . [Josh] will lead you to the real Jesus who is more radical, more rebellious, more tolerant and unwavering than popular podcast personalities dare to have you believe. If you want Jesus and not an off-ramp from faith, read this book." --Rick McKinley, author of Faith for This Moment and This Beautiful Mess

This book is about the absolute raw pain of surviving through life after childhood incest. The raw pain emotionally. The raw pain physiologically. The raw pain spiritually. The raw pain mentally. The raw pain physically. The raw pain sexually. The horrific damage done to one's entire soul. This book is about surviving in a sphere far beyond just walking this earth. This book is about the destruction done as a result of incest far beyond those physical moments of that touching. This book is about the carnage left behind long after those moments of incest were over; the touch was gone. This book was written not only for incest survivors but also for those who are living with raw pain from abuse of any kind. So survivors of all forms of abuse can tap into and embrace and validate their own life stories of abuse; each one's individual feelings of raw pain no matter where they came from. This book was written from a realm beyond a physical existence. This book is written to tell the world that incest and abuse of any kind, especially done to a child, is a lifelong sentence. Surviving after those moments of touch whether done once or a thousand times has the same impact. Those moments of violation alter one's life and life choices FOREVER! There is no such thing as living a life that remotely seems fair or just; nothing even close to "normal". The changes of a healthy, full life are stolen from you - TAKEN! It takes years to put the pieces together; to make sense of any of it. But only if you are fortunately enough to do so!

In 1943, against utterly hopeless odds, the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto rose up to defy the Nazi horror machine that had set out to exterminate them. One of the leaders of the Jewish Fighting Organization, which led the uprisings, was Yitzhak Zuckerman, known by his underground pseudonym, Antek. Decades later, living in Israel, Antek dictated his memoirs. The Hebrew publication of Those Seven Years: 1939-1946 was a major event in the historiography of the Holocaust, and now Antek's memoirs are available in English. Unlike Holocaust books that focus on the annihilation of European Jews, Antek's account is of the daily struggle to maintain human dignity under the most dreadful conditions. His passionate, involved testimony, which combines detail, authenticity, and gripping immediacy, has unique historical importance. The memoirs situate the ghetto and the resistance in the social and political context that preceded them, when prewar Zionist and Socialist youth movements were gradually forged into what became the first significant armed resistance against the Nazis in all of occupied Europe. Antek also describes the activities of the resistance after the destruction of the ghetto, when 20,000 Jews hid in "Aryan" Warsaw and then participated in illegal immigration to Palestine after the war. The only extensive document by any Jewish resistance leader in Europe, Antek's book is central to understanding ghetto life and underground activities, Jewish resistance under the Nazis, and Polish-Jewish relations during and after the war. This extraordinary work is a fitting monument to the heroism of a people. In 1943, against utterly hopeless odds, the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto rose up to defy the Nazi horror machine that had set out to exterminate them. A black law student navigates the era of Rodney King and the Oklahoma City bombing—and his own anger issues—in this "mordantly funny" novel ( San Francisco Chronicle). Shortlisted for the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence In Knucklehead we meet Marcus Hayes, a black law student who struggles, sometimes unsuccessfully, with the impulse to respond to everyday bad behavior with swift and antisocial action. The cause of this impulse is unknown to him. When Marcus unexpectedly becomes involved with the brilliant, kind Amalia Stewart, her love and acceptance pacify his demons. But when his demons return, he is no longer inclined to contain them . . . "By setting his novel in the '90s, Smyer, who lives in Oakland, has crafted some brutal deja vu. As Marcus reflects on Rodney King, the Million Man March and the Oklahoma City bombing, we think of Freddie Gray, Black Lives Matter and school shootings that have become a way of life. And when Marcus laments San Francisco's dwindling black population, here we are more than twenty years on, and it's only gotten worse. We should all be furious." — San Francisco Chronicle "Here is a list of things you'll need to read this book: ample space for stretching out the side stitches you'll get from laughter; half a box of tissues for the most gripping and harrowing dramas at the heart of the novel; a fresh stress ball for the tense situations the protagonist finds himself in (both of his own doing and not); and just a bit of that space in your heart to see people, in all their complexity, trying to do their best." — Pittsburgh Post-Gazette "Marcus Hayes careens through the racially divisive 1990s while trying to manage his compulsive anger, chaotic love life, and economic misfortunes . . . Smyer gives Marcus a sardonic and hilarious voice reminiscent of a Paul Beatty protagonist and endows him with a troubled psychology that plumbs the nuances of black male identity." —Kirkus Reviews "While not strictly a crime novel, Smyer's debut Knucklehead does contain a whole lot of guns, violence, and rage, as well as plenty of love and sadness. A black lawyer in the late '80s through the mid-'90s deals with micro and macro aggressions from a society determined to treat him as a criminal. Also, there are cats. Lots of cats." —Literary Hub
