This report describes the research activity on InSb varactors and the development of a cryogenically cooled, low noise, broadband parametric amplifier at X-band. Detailed measurements and evaluation of InSb and GaAs varactors have been made to determine their relative merits. Due to an anomalous current effect observed in InSb varactors, the final amplifier was delivered with a GaAs varactor. The amplifier had a noise temperature of 70 K, at 500 Mc bandwidth, and a mean gain of 16 db, when cooled to 77 K. (Author).

TRW has been developing low noise microwave parametric amplifiers with Josephson junction SQUIDs (Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices). This report summarizes the second phase of the program which includes measurement of the amplifier performance at X-band, and design and fabrication of a SQUID array amplifier. We have demonstrated gain in excess of 10 dB at 8.4 GHz and a measured noise temperature equal to 6K with an uncertainty of (+15/-7)K. Arrays with both 25 and 50 elements and a 50 ohm impedance have been designed and fabricated. These arrays should increase the dynamic range of the amplifier. (Author).

Components and techniques for application in small lightweight X-Band detector-amplifier circuits were reviewed and evaluated. Specific areas of investigation included: backward diode mixers; 'starved mixer operation'; low noise transistorized I.F. preamplifiers; an I.F. parametric amplifier; tunnel-diode local oscillators; a tunnel-diode self-oscillating mixer; and low noise R.F. pre-amplifiers. High power diode limiters which require no control voltages were developed in waveguide and strip transmission line. Integrated mixer/I.F. preamplifier assemblies with an overall noise figure of 8.0 db were realized. A compact solid-state local oscillator using a 'snap-off' diode as a high order multiplier and providing an output power of 10 mwatts was developed. Also, a tunnel-diode self-oscillating mixer with integral I.F. pre-amplifier assembly was designed. Engineering test models of three solid-state detector-amplifier circuits were fabricated and tested. Overall noise figures ranging from 11.0 db to 8.0 db were obtained. The physical and performance characteristics of several detector-amplifier circuits were evaluated and compared; and relationships between noise figure and weight and noise figure and cost were derived. Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) are commonly used to amplify signals that are too weak for direct processing for example in radio or cable receivers. Traditionally, low noise amplifiers are implemented via tuned amplifiers, exploiting inductors and capacitors in resonating LC-circuits. This can render very low noise but only in a relatively narrow frequency band close to resonance. There is a clear trend to use more bandwidth for communication, both via cables (e.g. cable TV, internet) and wireless links (e.g. satellite links and Ultra Wideband Band). Hence wideband low-noise amplifier techniques are very much needed. Wideband Low Noise Amplifiers Exploiting Thermal Noise Cancellation explores techniques to realize wideband amplifiers, capable of impedance matching and still achieving a low noise figure well below 3dB. This can be achieved with a new noise cancelling technique as described in this book. By using this technique, the thermal noise of the input transistor of the LNA can be cancelled while the wanted signal is amplified! The book gives a detailed analysis of this technique and presents several new amplifier circuits. This book is directly relevant for IC designers and researchers working on integrated transceivers. Although the focus is on CMOS circuits, the techniques can just as well be applied to other IC technologies, e.g. bipolar and GaAs, and even in discrete component technologies.
