Portanto, ele, o templo de Salomão, coroa todos estes esforços da Universal na cidade, pois tudo o que ocorre em São Paulo, a cidade mais globalizada da América do Sul, tem repercussão em outras capitais do Brasil e dos países latino-americanos e de outros continentes. O aparecimento de um movimento político de massas desperta nos cidadãos comuns, e naqueles que estudam os fenômenos políticos, sentimentos diversos e conflitantes e, mais do que isso, desafia a capacidade de compreensão dessas pessoas. Isso é ainda mais verdadeiro quando se trata de um movimento político que ascende ao poder com uma retórica inquestionavelmente extremista, como é o caso do bolsonarismo. Neste ensaio, apresentamos uma interpretação psicossocial desse movimento político à luz do conceito de identidade. Argumentamos que a manipulação da identidade coletiva teve uma dupla função na trajetória do bolsonarismo. Por um lado, desorientou e desestabilizou os antagonistas nos quatro anos do governo de Jair Bolsonaro por meio da projeção de uma identidade coletiva passível de ser descrita como insana e perversa. Por outro lado, vinculou milhões de seguidores ao movimento bolsonarista com o uso de um discurso ostensivo que agregava, em uma única categoria, valores, interesses e objetivos que estavam dispersos em diferentes segmentos da direita brasileira, dividia o mundo entre os defensores e os inimigos desses valores, representava os antagonistas como inimigos implacáveis e terríveis e mobilizava com grande eficácia afetos como medo e ódio. Nesse último caso, o processo de manipulação da identidade coletiva moldava a ação desses seguidores, o modo como atuavam politicamente e o modo como pensavam sobre si mesmos e sobre aqueles que tinham como inimigos.
