An 8-year old girl decides to make a list of all the things she likes and dislikes about dealing with her autistic brother, and in doing so realizes that she has created A Manual for Marco. "Through her genuine and caring accounts about growing up with an older, autistic brother, this 8-year-old also shows her love for her sibling who is special but sometimes does things that are not-so-special. I highly recommend this book written with sensitivity and beautifully illustrated." --Lorna d’Entremont, M.Ed., Special Needs Book Review "Shaila Abdullah proves to be a great ambassador for autism, using explanations and warm, welcoming illustrations in A Manual for Marco that give a complex condition a simpler explanation." --C. Hope Clark, Author of The Carolina Slade Mysteries and The Edisto Island Mysteries "A Manual for Marco is a welcome addition to children’s literature that will help in introducing the condition of autism to young people and providing information that will enable them to understand a little more about it so that it will not seem so scary." --Wayne Walker, Home School Book Reviews For more information, please visit www.ShailaAbdullah.com SHAILA ABDULLAH is an award-winning author and designer based in Austin, Texas. A Manual For Manuel written by Julio Cortázar and has been published by New York : Pantheon Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with Kidnapping categories.

"A Cuban of our acquaintance describes Cortázar as "the best French writer in Spanish." Not only because he has the candor to set his fiction in Paris, where so many South American writers have found breathing room, but because he has a truly French feel for the miscellaneous, kitchen-sinky, birds-eye texture of dally life. In A Manual for Manuel, you'll meet Andres, Marco, Francine, Lonstein, Lucienne, Patricio, and Susanna: a mixed group of French intellectuals and "Argentines who don't know what they're doing" in Paris. Together they make up "the Screwery," a collective that's more "pataphysical" than strictly revolutionary - involved in projects as diverse as collecting a scrapbook of newspaper clippings for Manuel (Patricio and Susanna's baby son), guerrilla theatre in department stores, counterfeiting and currency smuggling, and, grandest of all, the kidnapping of a bigwig from a multinational corporation in return for the release of captured revolutionaries in Latin America. Cortázar's narrative, as we've come to expect, is totally fractured into digressions, essays, undifferentiated dialogue, philosophical meditation, Finnegan's Wake-ish pun-prose, letters, Telexes, etc. Even the book's big, wonderful action scene (this charming crew's disastrous kidnap attempt) is muffled under all the stylistic swaddling. Cortázar is often at his best here: writing about a large group of friends, making them individual yet coherent - smart people being confused together. But the book suffers by comparison with his earlier, more substantial Hopscotch; even in Rabassa's adept and sympathetic translation, Manuel seems to lack the intensity and rich ambience we look for in prime Cortázar."--Kirkus

Rewriting Womanhood written by Nancy LaGreca and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-26 with Literary Criticism categories.

In Rewriting Womanhood, Nancy LaGreca explores the subversive refigurings of womanhood in three novels by women writers: La hija del bandido (1887) by Refugio Barragán de Toscano (Mexico; 1846–1916), Blanca Sol (1888) by Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera (Peru; 1845–1909), and Luz y sombra (1903) by Ana Roqué (Puerto Rico; 1853–1933). While these women were both acclaimed and critiqued in their day, they have been largely overlooked by contemporary mainstream criticism. Detailed enough for experts yet accessible to undergraduates, graduate students, and the general reader, Rewriting Womanhood provides ample historical context for understanding the key women’s issues of nineteenth-century Mexico, Peru, and Puerto Rico; clear definitions of the psychoanalytic theories used to unearth the rewriting of the female self; and in-depth literary analyses of the feminine agency that Barragán, Cabello, and Roqué highlight in their fiction. Rewriting Womanhood reaffirms the value of three women novelists who wished to broaden the ruling-class definition of woman as mother and wife to include woman as individual for a modern era. As such, it is an important contribution to women’s studies, nineteenth-century Hispanic studies, and sexuality and gender studies.

The Medical Renaissance Of The Sixteenth Century written by A. Wear and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985-03-07 with History categories.

This book examines the relationship of medicine to those intellectual and social changes which historians call the Renaissance. The contributors describe how the whole range of medicine, from practical therapeutics to surgery, anatomy and pharmacy, was developing. Some important questions about the nature of medicine as it was taught and practised are raised. These include the continuing vigour of Arabic and scholastic medicine, how this was reconciled with the renaissance love of all things Greek and the nature of medicine in different parts of Europe. The chapters are written by acknowledged experts in their subjects and are based on contributions read at a meeting called for the purpose in Cambridge and supported by the Wellcome Trust.
