Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene: A Manual for the Use of Colleges, Schools, and General Readers The following pages are based upon the author's lectures in the public schools of Brooklyn for the last eight years. Both as a physician in active practice and as a teacher, he has been impressed with the importance of truthful anatomical pictures as educators; and of the folly, on the one hand, of omitting from our text-books important points; or, on the other, of overloading the mind with a mass of technical material, which is of little value to the ordinary student. For that matter, it is assumed throughout the work that the time has gone by when students are to be compelled to study the natural sciences by committing to memory page after page of text-books. In the preparation of the book the active co-operation of men distinguished in special lines of work has been obtained. The kind of type and the color of the paper were selected under the advice of the well-known physician and oculist, Dr. C. R. Agnew, of New York. Dr. L. C.
