Excerpt from A Manual of French Prosody for the Use of English Students It has for some time seemed to me singular English boys should be expected to read and appreciate French verse by the light of the intellectus sibi permissus; while no one dreams of applying the same system, or rather want of system, to the study of Sophocles or Catullus. Doubtless the Greek and Latin metres are more intricate than the French; yet it may be questioned, on the other hand, whether they are not more natural to the English ear. At any rate, it may safely be asserted that French prosody, being untaught, remains in most cases unknown, and French verse continues to be to the French-reading and French-speaking Englishman a mysterious kind of prose. There are excellent French treatises on versification, notably those of Pierre Richelet, M. Napoleon Landais, M. de Banville, and M. Mainard, on which the present little book is principally based. But from the standpoint of an Englishman, still more of an English boy, these books are at once inadequate and over-elaborate. They lack the explanations required by the foreigner, whose ear is attuned to other combinations; they enter into details of taste unnecessary to a beginner; and they are tainted with the party spirit of the controversy between Classicism and Romanticism. Excerpt from A Handbook of French Phonetics This little book is intended as a manual for elementary and advanced students of the French language. In elementary courses it may be employed as a substitute for the pages devoted to pronunciation in whatever Grammar the teacher is using. In such courses the material printed in small type should be omitted. In advanced courses, the book may be used as a basis for a review of the pronunciation, and as a reference book. The authors have endeavored to present the essential facts of French pronunciation, but have purposely excluded the treatment of minor variations in sound (for example, intermediate vowel qualities) and the registration of words which are distinctly rare. In many cases Frenchmen themselves vary in the utterance of a given word or group of words: in such cases we have generally given only the variety which seems approved by the best usage. For such disputed questions, and for all matters of greater detail, the reader is urged to consult the books listed in the Bibliography. We have endeavored to present the essential facts as clearly and effectively as possible. Most earlier publications on the same subject mingle the treatment of the several sounds with the rules for the pronunciation of the several letters. The results of such a method seem to us unfortunate: the student confuses his material, and rarely concentrates his attention on the really important matter - the actual learning of the difficult French sounds. These dangers we have tried to avoid by treating, first, one by one, the several sounds; then, one by one, the several letters. Excerpt from The French Student's Manual, or Colloquial and Grammatical Exercises: Intended to Impart to the Student Both a Theoretical and Practical Knowledge of the French LanguageTowanns the end of the last century, when France became a prey to anarchy, many of her best citizens were complled to seek a refuge in foreign countries; and, having lost all their possessions, they endeavoured to earn an honest living by becoming teachers of the French language. The tremendous convulsions which agitated their native land, in her passage from despotism to com parative liberty, the wonderful achievements of the man who com manded the admiration and fear of the civilized world, and the flood of light which then began to pour from France over the whole scientific world, all tended to render a knowledge of her language indispensable to the well-educated of both Europe and America. Since that period, it has been more and more admired for its justness, purity, accuracy, and flexibility; and the demand for it has increased, especially in this country. Although the commercial relations existing between the United States and South America seem to render a knowledge of the Spanish language almost indispensable to our youth; yet it is comparatively neglect ed, while the French is extensively studied, from the fact that it has become universal and that an individual who is conversant with it, and with the English, may visit any portion of the civilized world, with the certainty of but seldom requiring an interpreter. The truth of this is so generally felt, that there can scarcely be found, in our widely spread republic, a school of any classical pre tensions ia which the French is not taught, or attempted to be taught.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Practical Introduction to French Phonetics: For the Use of English-Speaking Students and Teachers In the revision that modern language teaching has undergone during the last quarter of a century two facts have been firmly established: first, that the pronunciation of a modern foreign language should be taught with great care from the outset; and, secondly, that pronunciation can neither be taught nor learned to the best advantage without the aid of phonetics. There is, moreover, to use the words of Dr. Breul, 'a growing conviction that the teaching of modem languages in our secondary schools should henceforth as a rule not be entrusted to foreigners but to duly qualified English men and women.' But whether the language he teaches be his native speech or not, the teacher can no longer afford to dispense with a phonetic training. For however successful he may be without the aid of phonetics, he can always improve his results with such aid. Especially is this true when it is his lot to teach French to English-speakers.
