Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Draining When the portions of the book OF the farm treating of Drain. Ing appeared, it was suggested to me to publish the article in a separate form, because, as my friends alleged, so important a sub ject as Draining would make a popular book. However good the idea, or attering the suggestion, my time was too much occupied with the bringing out of my systematic work, to avail myself of it. Changes, however, have of late been made by the Legislature, which will ere long, as I conceive, necessitate the practice of drain ing in every part of the kingdom For, I suppose, even the most ardent promoter of free-trade is not disposed to deny, that the entire abolition of protective duties will place the produce of our own land in a position rhuch more unfavourable than that of' the foreigner, by both being brought into direct competition in our own market. Nor, on the other hand, can it be gainsaid by the strictest protectionist of native agriculture, that a very lar e pro portion of the land of this kingdom is still much in want 0 drain ing, and that draining is the first and most efficient step towards exciting the natural, and increasino' the acquired ferti ity of the soil. To compete, therefore, with t e foreigner, there exists with the agriculturists of this country the most powerful incentive for increasing the permanent fertility of the soil, if that be practicable; and its practicability is known by the agriculturists themselves to be in their own hands, by pursuing a substantial system of draining. It engages the attention of many of the well-known Engineers and Chemists of the present day. Universities are awarding diplomas to students showing an efficient knowledge of the subject, and Lecturers have been appointed to give special courses dealing particularly with this branch of Engineering. A Royal Commission has been appointed by the Government to study the methods employed in purifying sewage, and to report on the course of action to be taken in future as a basis for the guidance of those who have the disposal of these foul liquids in hand. Corporate bodies have also been sanctioned by Parliament, and they have sprung into existence for the specific purpose of enforcing Local Authorities to satisfactorily deal with the human, house, and trade refuse that may come Within their jurisdiction. It has quickened into active being a profession which has been gradually growing throughout a lengthy period of years. Indeed, such are the signs of its increasing importance and complexity that I fully expect before long it will have a still more recognised status at Engineering Colleges than it has at present. Unfortunately its students have, until recently, had to depend for their sources of information and instruction on what could be gathered from a minute and careful search through numerous volumes, essays, and lectures But even this diligence does not meet with its due reward, as such a search can only give an inappreciable and dissatisfying idea of the intricacies and vastness of the subject matter. I have myself felt the want of a work which would in one small volume deal with the science in a comprehensive, concise, and easily intelligible form, and have, therefore, gathered together information, data, and material in such a manner that I trust will appeal to students and impress them with the great possibilities of its study. Excerpt from Draining for Profit and Draining for Health Note to First Edition In presenting this book to the public the writer desires to nay that, having in view the great importance of thorough work in land draining, and believing it advisable to avoid everything which might be construed into an approval of half-way measures, he has purposely taken tbe most radical view of the whole subject, and has endeavored to emphasize the necessity for the utmost thoroughness in all draining operations, from the first staking of the lines to the flnal filling-iu of the ditches. That it is sometimes necessary, because of limited means, or limited time, or for other good reasons, to drain partially or imperfectly, or with a view only to temporary results, is freely acknowledged. In these cases the occasion for less completeness in the work must determine the extent to which the directions herein laid down are to b; disregarded; but it is believed that, even in such cases, the principles on which those directions are founded should be always borne in mind. Newport, R.L, 1867. Note To Second Edition. None of the principles set forth in the First Edition of this book have been modified by later experience. Some of the processes for the execution of the work have, however, been so much improved as to make a revision necessary. Newport, R.I., 1879. Note To Third Edition. It is now twenty years since this book was first written. During this time the extension of the tile drainage of agricultural lands throughout the North and West, and to no little extent throughout the South, has been very great. Motley, in The Dutch Republic, says that, when the hat ed Duke of Alva entered a certain city of the Netherlands no military salute was fired, as would have been preper but, instead, a deputation from the city fathers appeared be fore-him saying they had come to give thirty-nine good and sufficient reasons for the failure. first, they had no can non; second, they had no powder; third - but the duke waived the recital of the other thirty-seven reasons. Tile drainage, and that, too, with round tiles (round inside and round or octagonal outside), is now admitted by all who are well informed on the subject to be the best and really the cheapest sort of drainage for soils that need artificial drainage. Tiles can be made from the local soil and subsoil at or near all localities that need tile 'drainage. Properly made, burned, and laid, there is no reason why the tiles and the drains should not last for centuries, while all other kinds of underdrains soon rot, choke, are spoiled by land or water vermin, or for other cause become practically useless. To dwell on any of these kinds of drains, explaining their con struction, would be like describing to an inquiring road traveler the angles, landmarks, and windings of the wrong road. This little book, therefore, will not go into curious' ancient history on the subject, but from first to last will try to give just so much of present, well-established facts, reasons, and methods, as shall enable the wide-awake, thinking, studying farmer to understand the underlying principles and the best present methods, and enable him to put them into practice.
