Only those experimental methods have been included that are strictly scientific and that can be depended upon to give good results in the hands of the average student. Although several pieces of apparatus, experimental methods, and deriva tions of formulae that possess some. Novelty appear, our fixed purpose has been to use the standard forms except in cases Where an extended trial in large classes has demonstrated the superiority of the proposed innovation. It has been assumed that the experiment is rare that should be performed before the student understands the theory in volved and the derivation Of the formula required. Couse quently the theory of each experiment is given in detail and the required formula developed at length. The more important sources of error are pointed out, and means are indicated by which these errors may be minimized or accounted for. Excerpt from Practical Physics, Vol. 1: A Laboratory Manual Fro Colleges and Technical Schools The authors believe that physical laboratory work should accompany lecture and recitation work in physics from the beginning of the study of this science in the college or technical school, and they believe that a laboratory manual should set forth a series of definite exercises. A general discussion of how to measure a thing is, in their opinion, not a satisfactory basis for the laboratory work of a student. This laboratory manual has been prepared with these ideas in mind. A group of students who are beginning a laboratory course on the basis of this manual should be required to study the intro-ductory chapter, and to solve the problems illustrating the calculation of probable error. The system which has been used with great satisfaction by the authors in the assignment of laboratory exercises is described on page 2. The authors believe that one of the most important aspects of laboratory work in physics is that it gives to the student a series of more or less distinctly theoretical problems based upon experimental data obtained by themselves, and in accordance with this idea, the authors believe that a student should be required to work up his laboratory reports outside of the laboratory as specified on page 3. This manual is issued in three small volumes. The first volume is devoted to Precise Measurements and to Experiments in Mechanics and Heat; the second volume is devoted to Elementary and Advanced Measurements in Electricity and Magnetism; and the third volume is devoted to Photometry and to Experiments in Light and Sound. It is neither a text-book of theoretical physics nor a laboratory manual of practical physics. We have sought rather to encourage inquiry than to satisfy curiosity, rather to suggest experiments than to prescribe exercises. Every teacher of physics knows that many experiments cannot, under ordinary conditions, be made to yield satisfactory results in the hands of beginners. In dealing with such cases we have not hesitated to describe both experiment and results, introducing our description, as a rule, with one or more simpler experiments embodying the principle which it is sought to enforce. We believe that clear ideas are more easily attained by this means than by the hazardous device of manipulating imperfect observations until they seem to illustrate or "prove" some particular truth. While therefore following, in the main, a "heuristic" plan, we have not hesitated to modify it whenever the attempt to stimulate the interest and ingenuity of the student by such means seemed likely to weaken or destroy his regard for truth and accuracy.
