A second male specimen is an inch shorter, and has the tarsus only 2 inches 2 lines long; a third individual is of intermediate dimensions. SHORT-BILLED MEW GULL. (Larus brachyrhynchus, Richard. North. Zool. ii. p. 422.) Sp. Charact.--With a short, thickish bill; the tarsus scarcely 2 inches long; quills not tipped with white: a short white space on the 2 exterior ones, and blackish shafts. The specimen described by Dr. Richardson was a female, killed on the 23d of May, 1826, at Great Bear Lake. Some brown markings on the tertiaries, primary coverts and bastard wing, with an imperfect subterminal bar on the tail, point it out as a young bird, in the spring moult. The bill is shorten than in L. zonorhynchus, and stouter than in L. canus, and like it, is wax-yellow, with a bright yellow rictus and point. Its tarsus is nearly one third shorter than that of the Ring-Billed Gull. Length 19 inches; wing 13J; of the bill above, 1J inches; tarsus 1 inch 11 lines. IVORY GULL. (Larus eburneus, Gmel. Lath. Charact.--Pure white; bill stout; feet black; naked space above the tarsus very small; webs of the feet somewhat indented; tarsus 1J inches; first primary longest.--Young; lores and chin dusky-grey, dark brownish spots on the wing coverts and scapulars, with bars of the same on the end of the tail and tips of the quills: bill blackish, pale at the tip. This beautiful species, called sometimes the Snow Bird, from the pure whiteness of its plumage, is found in great numbers on the coasts of Spitzberg, Greenland, Davis's Straits...

Excerpt from A Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and of Canada This work is practically an edition of " A Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and of Canada," written by THOMAS Nuttall, though only as much of the original title has been retained as seemed consistent with the changed character of the text. Nuttall's work has been out of print for several years; but its popularity and real value have kept it in demand, and the few copies recently offered for sale were disposed of at high prices. A new edition was thus called for; but it seemed unwise to issue the work in its original form, or to remodel it to the extent that would be required to arrange it in harmony with the new regime of affairs ornithological; for the science has advanced rapidly since the "Manual" was written, and the changes effected have been numerous and important. A new and entirely different system of classification has come in vogue; the nomenclature has been altered and trinomials introduced; and, indeed, little is left of American ornithology as Nuttall knew it, except the birds, - and even of these, two species have become extinct, and a large number of new forms have been discovered.
