BY THE AUTHOR OF A MAVERICK NEW ZEALAND WAY, FINALIST IN THE TRAVEL CATEGORY, INTERNATIONAL BOOK AWARDS, MAY 2018. If you've heard of famous Himalayan peaks like Annapurna and Ama Dablam, but aren't into mountaineering, this book is for you! A Maverick Himalayan Way is about the Himalayas, but it isn't a hardcore mountaineering book. Instead, Mary Jane recounts her adventures and misadventures as an average sort of a person who happens to travel into the world's most famous mountain region; and to several other places in Asia as well. Like most Kiwis, Mary Jane was raised on tales of the New Zealander Edmund Hillary's climbing of Mount Everest alongside the Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, and of Hillary's good works among the impoverished Sherpa thereafter. But she never felt the urge to go to the Himalayas herself, until friends persuaded her to go with them on a trek up to Everest Base Camp. What the heck, she thought-let's go! But if she was going to go to the Himalayas, she wasn't going to confine herself to the Everest region-or even to Nepal. In A Maverick Himalayan Way, Mary Jane describes her adventures in several parts of Nepal: in the Everest region, Manaslu, Annapurna, and the Kathmandu Valley. And, In the Chitral district of Pakistan, bordering Afghanistan, where the Hindu Kush mountains continue the Himalayas westward. In Sikkim, a once-independent principality east of Nepal. In several parts of India, namely Srinagar (in Kashmir), Dharamshala, Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai and Kerala. In Abu Dhabi; and, In China and Japan, including a journey into the Japanese Alps, little-known outside Japan itself.

Kiwi adventurer Mary Jane Walker had no particular intention of visiting the Himalayas, till one day some friends invited her on a cheap trekking trip. So began a deep engagement with the region and its peoples and a series of return trips. Mary Jane visits and treks Pakistan's north-west frontier, Kashmir, Dharamshala (the abode of the Dalai Lama), high Himalayan Nepal (the Annapurna, Manaslu and Everest regions), and Sikkim. She also explores central India, Pakistan's north-west frontier, Mumbai, Kerala and Kolkata, and takes a trip to the ecologically sensitive Chitwan region on the border of Nepal and India. She discusses the history and social conditions of the region's peoples including the consequences of the tragic 2015 Nepal earthquake, and makes many surprising discoveries: such as the fact that ancient coins minted in Peshawar (now in Pakistan) once bore the image of the Buddha--and, even more remarkably, his name in Greek letters!

On September 30, 2006 gunfire echoed through the thin air near Advance Base Camp on Cho Oyu Mountain. Frequented by thousands of climbers each year, Cho Oyu lies nineteen miles east of Mt. Everest on the border between Tibet and Nepal. To the elite mountaineering community, it offers a straightforward summit -- a warm-up climb to her formidable sister. To Tibetans, Cho Oyu promises a gateway to freedom through a secret glacial path: the Nangpa La. Murder in the High Himalaya is the unforgettable account of the brutal killing of Kelsang Namtso -- a seventeen-year-old Tibetan nun fleeing to India -- by Chinese border guards. Witnessed by dozens of Western climbers, Kelsang's death sparked an international debate over China's savage oppression of Tibet. Adventure reporter Jonathan Green has gained rare entrance into this shadow-land at the rooftop of the world. In his affecting portrait of modern Tibet, Green raises enduring questions about morality and the lengths we go to achieve freedom.

A Nomad In Nepal And The Lands Next Door written by Mary Jane Walker and has been published by Maverick Traveller Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-05 with Travel categories.

A Nomad in Nepal and the Lands Next Door updates Mary Jane's earlier book, A Maverick Himalayan Way. With links to blog posts containing colour photographs and videos, A Nomad in Nepal and the Lands Next Door describes Mary Jane's three trips, so far, to Nepal and the Himalayan region. A little over a decade ago, Mary Jane knew almost nothing about the region. Since then, she has learned a lot. Delving deeply into Himalayan history, A Nomad in Nepal is also a mine of useful firsthand experience about guiding and trekking pitfalls and the politics of the region, all while describing epic treks in Nepal and visits to Sikkim, Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh), Sringagar (Kashmir) and the exotic Chitral region of Pakistan as well, hard-up against Afghanistan, where the local Kalash tribe is menaced by the Taliban. A Nomad in Nepal describes three mountain treks in detail: the trek to Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna/Manaslu Circuit, and the Three Passes route. Mary Jane also describes her experiences climbing in the Hindu Kush mountains of Chitral. She stayed on a houseboat on the city lake of Srinagar, and was shown around the region by the family of a guide who calls himself Raj on the plans of India and Yaqoob in the mountains. In Chitral, she stayed with an erudite professor and his family, all the better to discuss the local situation. For a change of scenery, Mary Jane also visited the Chitwan National Park, in the steaming lowlands of Nepal, where tigers and the little-known Indian Rhinoceros abound, along with other curious creatures such as the sloth bear, which resembles a giant badger and carries its babies on its back.
