Seeks to demonstrate that the study of English poetry is enriched by the insights of modern linguistic analysis, and that linguistic and critical disciplines are not separate but complementary. Examining a wide range of poetry, Professor Leech considers many aspects of poetic style, including the language of past and present, creative language, poetic licence, repetition, sound, metre, context and ambiguity.

Excerpt from The Measures of the Poets: A New System of English Prosody The purpose of this book is to assist both students and lovers of poetry in general towards such a complete enjoyment of the beauty and music of English verse as can only be attained through a clear comprehension of its metrical framework; that is to say, a knowledge of the measures in which it is composed and the scansional schemes on which these are based. If this end is to be achieved, it is unquestionable that we must have a system of prosody that is on the one hand sound in principle, and on the other not liable to break down when brought to the test of application. Incredible as it may seem, no complete system has yet been put forth, so far as I can discover, which fulfils either of these indispensable conditions. In his book, The Science of English Verse, published some forty years ago - a book which unfortunately I did not hear of until the present work was written - the American poet and musician Sidney Lanier advocated the trochaic base for our lyrics, but strangely enough retained the iambic base for blank verse. English books on the subject still continue to adopt the iambic base, even for lyrics, and accordingly the system put forth in these pages is, so far as the systems in vogue are concerned, altogether revolutionary. "The English Poetic Mind" is a literary critique of the poems by such names as Shakespeare, Wadsworth, Longfellow among others. The author seeks to explore the subject of what constitutes a great poem. The author explains his method thus, "I have been concerned with the poetry only as it exists, and with its interrelation. Even the prose statements which the poets themselves made about their poetry are omitted. Criticism has done so much to illuminate the poets, and yet it seems, with a few exceptions, both of the past and the present, still not sufficiently to relate the poets to the poets, to explain poetry by poetry. Yet in the end what other criterion have we? Wordsworth's poetry is vii likely to explain Shakespeare's poetry much better than we can, because poetry is a thing sui generis. It explains itself by existing..."

Measure For Measure written by Annie Finch and has been published by Everyman's Library this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-31 with Poetry categories.

This comprehensive and joyous celebration of metered verse brings together some of the best rhythmic lines in literature. After a century dominated by free verse, there is a new excitement about rediscovering poetry’s ancient musical and performative roots. Iambic pentameter is the most familiar meter for most readers, but it only scratches the surface of the extraordinary diversity of rhythmic patterns that poets have employed over the ages. That astonishing variety is fully explored in this one-of-a-kind anthology, packed with great poems that beg to be read aloud. Measure for Measure is organized by meter, with brief explanatory headnotes covering accentual meter, trochees, anapests, dactyls, iambs, ballad meter, and more exotic species like amphibrachs, dipodics, hendecasyllabics, sapphics, and more. The entrancing examples of each meter are drawn from a wide range of poetic traditions, from Ovid and Sappho to Shakespeare and Milton, encompassing the Romantics, the Victorians, ballads, folk songs, poets of the Harlem Renaissance, and modern-day poets. Whether performed aloud or enjoyed in silence, Measure for Measure is a treat for the ear, the heart, and the mind.
