D. 1629-39): Plea for the Correct Spelling of the Chinchona Genus Fifteen years ago the Chinchona trees, which yield quinine and other febrifuge alkaloids, were only found wild in the forests on the slopes of the cordilleras of the Andes. Now they are carefully cultivated in British India and Ceylon, in Java and Jamaica. The beautiful trees, with their glossy leaves and fragrant racemes of flowers, cover the sides of the Dodabetta peak, the slopes overhanging Wynaad, and the hills at Rungbi in Sikkim. They yield thousands of pounds of bark, which will soon be supplied, in the form of a cheap medicine, to the millions of fever patients of India, while they also, by the sale of the higher-priced barks in the London market, give a remunerative return to the Government.
