Também é difícil ficar indiferente diante deste livro de Luís Augusto Fischer, que enfoca o lado menos estudado da obra de Nelson: suas crônicas. Crônicas? Nada disso, argumenta Luís Augusto Fischer. Ensaios! Ensaios!, proclama o crítico, com "olho rútilo" e um não menos rodriguiano "vozeirão de barítono de Puccini". A crônica, para Fischer, é um gênero literário mais próximo das gracinhas do que do humor verdadeiro, mais inclinada ao descompromisso do que ao envolvimento pessoal; um gênero que não se arrisca –e Rubem Braga é desancado de passagem— a dar conta, de corpo e alma, do tempo presente. São estas algumas das qualidades que Fischer identifica, de modo persuasivo, ao mesmo tempo livre e sistemático, nos textos de Nelson Rodrigues. Mais ainda, esse "Montaigne brasileiro" foi quem definitivamente –e Mário de Andrade leva suas lambadas também—incorporou a linguagem coloquial à literatura brasileira. A revalorização da obra jornalística de Nelson Rodrigues deve muito a Ruy Castro, que organizou vários volumes de suas confissões, desabafos, provocações contra D. Hélder Câmara, estagiárias de calcanhar sujo e padres de passeata. São, sem dúvida, textos que ninguém lê sem prazer, até pelo que têm de hiperbólico em sua desconcertante naturalidade. Fischer dá um passo além nessa recuperação, mobilizando com agilidade e sem pedantismo um expressivo aparato teórico (em geral marxista, aliás) para acertar os relógios da crítica com esse tremendo dinossauro das nossas letras. Escrevendo contra a esquerda em plena ditadura, não é à toa que Nelson Rodrigues tenha ficado por muito tempo na geladeira; Fischer não se intimida diante do problema, reconhecendo que em muitos pontos o "reacionário" tinha razão.
