O tema da mentira envolve dois grandes problemas filosóficos: saber se a mentira faz parte da natureza humana ou da essência do ser humano e se esta entra em contradição com a verdade, motivos pelos quais o tema foi trabalhado por diversos pensadores desde a Antiguidade, tanto entre os pagãos como entre os cristãos; entretanto – como observa Boniface Ramsey –, Agostinho é o primeiro Padre da Igreja a ter abordado esse tema, consagrando-lhe um tratado intitulado A mentira, em 395. Vinte e cinco anos mais tarde, em 420, não estando satisfeito com o que ali havia escrito, ou tendo deixado alguns pontos confusos ou obscuros na primeira obra, escreveu um segundo opúsculo, intitulado Contra mendacium (Contra a mentira). Em síntese, Agostinho foi levado a escrever essas duas obras para combater principalmente a má interpretação dada por alguns católicos que consideravam certos tipos de mentiras como úteis e moralmente aceitáveis, como um "mal necessário" ou um "mal menor" para se evitar um "mal maior", antecipando-se aquilo que na Modernidade ficaria conhecido por "tese da exceção à mentira".
