A Miscellany of Muses? There are nine of them altogether and they all make an appearance in this volume. Many readers will remember Erato and Calliope from their previous appearances in Conversations with a Muse. Here they are again, accompanied by their sisters: Melpomene the moaner, Polyhymnia the professional, unhappy Clio, dancing Terpsichore, astral Urania, Thalia the comic and Euterpe the flautist. The verses are designed to be read as one continuous story, although many of the poems stand on their own. If you have ever wondered how a famous Swedish furnishings company came by its name, why magnets never wear out, or how stardust is formed, then look no further. Answers, of a sort, to these and other questions, are to be found here. One does not need to have read the previous volume to enjoy this book. However, those who know Conversations with a Muse will meet old friends in new situations. Hopefully the reacquaintance will be a happy one!

Aaron Hill written by Christine Gerrard and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

During his lifetime Aaron Hill was one of the most lively cultural patrons and brokers on the London literary scene - an image hard to square with the company of undistinguished scribblers to which Pope relegated him in the Dunciad. Aaron Hill: The Muses' Projector, 1685-1750, the firstbiography of this fascinating figure for nearly a century, aims to correct the distorted picture of the Augustan cultural scene which Pope passed down to posterity. Hill deliberately confronted Pope in his attempt to free poetry's sublime and visionary potential from the stale platitudes ofneo-classical convention. An early champion of women poets, he also enjoyed close relationships with Eliza Haywood and Martha Fowke, and brought his three writing daughters Urania, Astrea, and Minerva into close contact with his lifelong friend the novelist Samuel Richardson. In 1711 Hill, as stagemanager and librettist, introduced Handel to the English stage, as well as lobbying tirelessly for innovation in the eighteenth-century theatre. His entrepreneurial energies, directed at both commercial and cultural projects, mirror the zeitgeist of early Hanoverian Britain.

Miscellanies Poetry And Authorship 1680 1800 written by Carly Watson and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-26 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book is a critical study of the ancestors of contemporary poetry anthologies: the poetic miscellanies of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It argues that miscellanies are a distinctive kind of literary collection and that their popularity in the period 1680–1800 had a far-reaching impact on authors, publishers, and readers of poetry. This study expands the definition of miscellanies to include single-author collections called miscellanies as well as the multiple-author collections that have traditionally been the focus of scholarly attention. It shows how multiple-author miscellanies fostered different kinds of literary community and explores the neglected role of single-author miscellanies in the self-fashioning of eighteenth-century writers. Later chapters examine miscellanies’ relationships with periodicals, their contribution to the formation of the literary canon, and their reception and transformation in the hands of readers. The book draws on newly available digital data as well as evidence from hundreds of printed miscellanies to shed new light on how poetry was written, published, and read in the long eighteenth century.

The Harmony Of The Muses written by Robert Chamberlain and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Poetry categories.

Robert Chamberlain compiled The Harmony of the Muses in 1654 as a tribute to the witty English verse of the early seventeenth century. The unique surviving copy (in the Huntington Library) includes poems of extraordinary quality and importance by many of the greatest poets of the English Renaissance: eight by John Donne (including the earliest publication of three of his finest elegies), seven by Thomas Carew, five by William Strode, and two by Ben Jonson, among many others. The poems indeed make good Chamberlain's promise of 'transcendent wit' as their authors bring 'Learning and Invention' to their treatment of 'the passionate Affections either of men or women.
