Excerpt from A Modern Rhetoric The plan of the book is psychologic. Informal composition is taken up almost at the beginning, and is treated broadly as a whole before the closer study of sentences and paragraphs is introduced. The pupil is thus encouraged to express himself freely, before he is required to write, as Quintilian puts it, with force, point, and vehemence of style. The stages through which he passes from elementary to formal composition are easy and gradual. All help is given to make him feel that composition is a practical and profitable exercise. Excerpt from Good Writing: A Modern RhetoricThe Example of lincoln.-abraham Lincoln once told a friend of his own burning desire, as a boy, to become a master of lucid English: Among my earliest recollections I remember how, when a mere child, I used to get irritated when anybody talked to me in a way I could not understand. I do not think. I ever got angry at anything else in my life; but that always disturbed my temper. I can remember going to my little bedroom, after hear ing the neighbors talk of an evening with my father, and spend ing no small part of the night walking up and down and trying to make out what was the exact meaning of some of their, to me, dark sayings. I could not sleep, although I tried to, when I got on such a hunt for an idea until I had caught it; and when I thought I had got it, I was not satisfied until I had repeated it over and over; until I had put it in language plain enough, as I thought, for any boy I knew to comprehend. This was a kind of passion with me, and it has stuck by me; for I am never easy now, when, I am handling a thought, till I have bounded it north and bounded it south, and bounded it east and bounded it west.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Modern Composition and Rhetoric The general aim of this book is to give the beginning college student a thorough training in the fundamentals of composition. We have tried to include such theory, fact, and practice as are necessary to competent, clear, and straightforward writing; at the same time we have attempted to make plain to the student how he may express himself as an individual. We have not addressed the professional writer, or even the accomplished amateur, but the person who needs instruction and training before he can perform the requirements of everyday college and post-college life. Excerpt from A Modern Composition and Rhetoric: Brief Course; Containing the Principles of Correct English for Schools Nearly two thousand years ago Quintilian defined rhetoric as "the art of speaking well." Had he lived in the present age, he would undoubtedly have said, "the art of speaking and of writing well." No better phrase can be found to describe the true function of rhetoric to-day. Previous to the last decade it was regarded as an ornamental study, abounding in theory and subtle distinctions of diction and style. With the development of the study of English in the schools came an awakening to the true value of rhetoric, and its relation to the study of literature and composition. To-day rhetoric and composition are inseparably associated in teaching the methods of simple, direct, and accurate expression, the principle of one being supplemented by the abundant practice of the other. In the making of the present text-book the authors have been influenced by two important considerations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Rhetoric of Oratory This book is a treatise on oratorical composition. While adapted to the needs of public speakers generally, it is intended primarily as a text-book for school and college students. That the young men who are being sent forth annually from our schools and colleges should receive some training in the theory and art of public speech would seem to require no argument. We are a nation of speechmakers, notwithstanding the fact that many good people would have it otherwise. It is sometimes claimed that the press in modern times has supplanted the orator, but a moment's observation of actual conditions will show how unfounded is this contention. There never was a time when oratory constituted so potent a factor in the national life as it does to-day. There never was a time when a talent for public speech brought so much political and social influence. The press has not supplanted the orator, and in the very nature of things it never can; for the personal relation of speaker and hearer can never be supplied by the lifeless type. Excerpt from The Foundations of Rhetoric The Introduction sets forth as simply, clearly, and compactly as possible the leading facts of English grammar, including definitions of technical terms. The body of the book is in three Parts. Part I., which treats of Words, is divided into two books: in Book I., proper and improper expressions, arranged for convenience in classes that correspond to the several parts of speech, are set side by side; in Book II., questions of choice between words equally proper are considered. Part II., which treats of Sentences, is divided into two books: in Book I., good and bad sentences, arranged for convenience in chapters that correspond to the five important qualities of style, are set side by side; in Book II., questions of choice between sentences equally proper are considered. Part III. treats of Paragraphs. Believing that every one should be encouraged to do work for himself, I begin the discussion of every question with an example, - a practice which enables the student to discover for himself the rule under which the example falls. For young scholars this is the true order; for it is the order in which the mind naturally works. In experience, facts come before principles or rules: induction precedes deduction. Believing that attention should be drawn primarily to good English, I have, in every case in which proper and improper forms appear side by side, placed the proper form where it will first catch the eye. Within the prescribed limits, it is of course impracticable to enumerate all possible departures from propriety in the choice of words or in their arrangement. Excerpt from A Practical Introduction to English Rhetoric: Precepts and Exercises After devoting nearly thirty years of his life to the sacred cause of education, the author of this volume has been requested by many of his friends to arrange for publication the notes on Rhetoric and Poetry which he had gradually accumulated. These consisted partly of precepts carefully selected from the works of the best critics, ancient and modern, partly of choice models gathered from the works of the most distinguished writers, to which were added the results of his own observation and experience. He began his task by publishing, last year, The Art of Oratorical Composition, for the benefit of those who aim at success in public speaking. Encouraged by the readiness with which that treatise has already been adopted in many leading colleges, and urged by his superiors and others to undertake a work of still wider usefulness, he has now written this Practical Introduction to English Rhetoric as a general text-book on Composition for the use of Colleges and Academies. He rests his claims to the patronage of such institutions on the following points: I. The work is so comprehensive as to embrace all the precepts of Rhetoric usually explained to the pupils of academies.
