The Montessori Method represents an explicit idealism and turn away from war and violence toward peace and reconstruction. It is built on coherent visions of how to improve human society by helping children realize their full potential as intelligent, creative, whole persons. In the Montessori Method, children are viewed as active authors of their own development, strongly influenced by natural, dynamic, self-righting forces within themselves, opening the way toward growth and learning. Teachers depend for their work with children on carefully prepared, aesthetically pleasing environments that serve as a pedagogical tool and provide strong messages about the curriculum and about respect for children. Partnering with parents is highly valued in the Montessori Method, and children are evaluated by means other than traditional tests and grades.

Montessori education is an educational approach created by Italian physician and educator Dr. Maria Montessori. Montessori realized many of her ideas while working with mentally challenged children. In her first school, La Casa Dei Bambini, that was opened to working class children in the poor neighborhood of San Lorenzo in Rome. Her method characterized by freedom within limits, emphasis on independence, and respect for a child's natural physical, psychological, and social development. Despite a range of practices exist with the name "Montessori," the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) and also the American Montessori Society (AMS) cite these elements as essential: Mixed age classrooms; classrooms for students ages 30 months or 3 to 6 years old are the most common by far, but 0-3, 6-9, 9-12, 12-15, and 15-18-year-old classrooms exist also. Student choice of pursuit from within a prescribed array of options. Uninterrupted segments of work time, ideally three hours A discovery model, where students learn notions from working with materials, rather than by direct education. Specialized pedagogical materials developed by Montessori and her collaborators. Freedom of movement within the classroom. A trained Montessori teacher. Dr Montessori Montessori moved forward with her plan to study medicine. She appealed to Guido Baccelli, the teacher of clinical medicine at the University of Rome, but was actively discouraged. Nonetheless, in 1890, she enlisted in the University of Rome in a qualification course in natural sciences, succeeding examinations in botany, anatomy, zoology, experimental physics, histology, and general and organic chemistry, and receiving her diploma di licenza in 1892. This degree, with additional studies in Italian and Latin, qualified her for entrance into the medical program at the University in 1893

Dr. Montessori's Own Handbook by Maria Montessori. If a preface is a light which should serve to illumine the contents of a volume, I choose, not words, but human figures to illustrate this little book intended to enter families where children are growing up. I therefore recall here, as an eloquent symbol, Helen Keller and Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who are, by their example, both teachers to myself––and, before the world, living documents of the miracle in education. In fact, Helen Keller is a marvelous example of the phenomenon common to all human beings: the possibility of the liberation of the imprisoned spirit of man by the education of the senses. Here lies the basis of the method of education of which the book gives a succinct idea. If one only of the senses sufficed to make of Helen Keller a woman of exceptional culture and a writer, who better than she proves the potency of that method of education which builds on the senses? If Helen Keller attained through exquisite natural gifts to an elevated conception of the world, who better than she proves that in the inmost self of man lies the spirit ready to reveal itself? Helen, clasp to your heart these little children, since they, above all others, will understand you. They are your younger brothers: when, with bandaged eyes and in silence, they touch with their little hands, profound impressions rise in their consciousness, and they exclaim with a new form of happiness: “I see with my hands.” They alone, then, can fully understand the drama of the mysterious privilege your soul has known. When, in darkness and in silence, their spirit left free to expand, their intellectual energy redoubled, they become able to read and write without having learnt, almost as it were by intuition, they, only they, can understand in part the ecstasy which God granted you on the luminous path of learning. Maria Montessori.
