The essays in A Moving Picture Feast discuss every Hollywood film made from a Hemingway work and represent the most diverse response yet to the Hemingway-Hollywood relationship. The contributors examine the popular public image Hollywood created of Hemingway the man and offer a provocative look at the esthetic relationship between fiction and cinema. They criticize the films themselves as art, in many cases with scene-by-scene analysis, and explore the process by which films are adapted from novels and short stories. Their research includes inside decisions made by producers and directors that affected the final versions of specific films. With its valuable bibliography, listing nearly 400 articles, reviews, and screenplay typescripts, A Moving Picture Feast will be an important resource for film buffs as well as any student or scholar of Hemingway. Oliver's collection of 15 articles about film versions of Ernest Heminway's works conducts an interesting and worthwhile conversation about the possible relationships between art in one media and the work it inspires in another. Choice This collection of 15 chapters by Hemingway film scholars discusses every Hollywood film made from a Hemingway work and represents the most diverse response yet to the Hemingway-Hollywood relationship. The contributors go beyond discussing the failure of the film medium to be worthy of Hemingway to criticize the films themselves as art and in one case with scene-by-scene analysis. They explore the process by which films are adapted from novels and short stories. Their research includes inside decisions made by producers and directors that affected the final versions of specific films. Their analysis is of diverse subjects--from the dichotomy of Hemingway as private person and celebrity, to the prevailing film morality of revising original stories to fit Hollywood standards. This important addition to the small body of literature on Hemingway films will shed light on a neglected area of Hemingway studies. With its valuable bibliography listing nearly 400 titles--articles, reviews, and screenplay typescripts--A Moving Picture Feast will be an important resource for film buffs as well as for any student or scholar of Hemingway. The book is divided into three sections. The chapters in the first section explore the similarities and vast differences between Hemingway's style and general cinematic techniques. The contributors examine the popular public image Hollywood created of Hemingway and offer a provocative look at the esthetic relationship between fiction and cinema. The chapters in the second section examine the films made from Hemingway novels. One chapter compares three different versions of To Have and Have Not; another discusses Hemingway's extensive collaboration on the documentary film The Spanish Earth. The third section examines the films made from the short stories. This section includes a compelling discussion of film noir and how this technique applies to the film versions of The Killers. Another chapter offers a fascinating comparison of the esthetics of the short stories of In Our Time and the classic D. W. Griffith film The Birth of a Nation.

Essays on the links between film and fiction, and their mutual influence. Fiction and film interrelate closely to each other, and the specially commissioned essays in this volume all consider different aspects of this relationship. Beginning with discussions of Dickens and Victorian literature, the contributors, all leading scholars in this field, demonstrate how visual devices like the magic lantern caught the interest of writers and affected their choice of subject and method. The impact of the cinema on the British modernistsis then discussed, and the remaining essays provide detailed case studies on such subjects as Hemingway, Updike, and the depiction of women in contemporary fiction and film.

The phrase 'cinematic fiction' has now been generally accepted into critical discourse, but is usually applied to post-war novels. This book asks a simple question: given their fascination with the new medium of film, did American novelists attempt to apply cinematic methods in their own writings? From its very beginnings the cinema has played a special role in defining American culture. Covering the period from the 1910s up to the Second World War, Cinematic Fictions offers new insights into classics like The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath discussing major writers' critical writings on film and active participation in film-making. Cinematic Fictions is also careful not to portray 'cinema' as a single or stable entity. Some novelists drew on silent film; others looked to the Russian theorists for inspiration; and yet others turned to continental film-makers rather than to Hollywood. Film itself was constantly evolving during the first decades of the twentieth century and the writers discussed here engaged in a kind of dialogue with the new medium, selectively pursuing strategies of montage, limited point of view and scenic composition towards their different ends. Contrasting a diverse range of cinematic and literary movements, this will be compulsory reading for scholars of American literature and film.

A comprehensive guide to all major film adaptations based on the novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, this is essential for scholars of American modernism and film studies. The author takes the approach that all visual and printed literature is born from a cycle of celebrity culture, in which authors continually create new works and reconstruct their personal images based on audience reception. The text includes two dozen reviews of individual films, from the silent era to present-day hits, such as Baz Luhrman's The Great Gatsby, as well as critical commentary from leading scholars of both modernist literature and film studies.

Based on revealing letters and other documents from archives, Hemingway and His Conspirators has the dramatic personae of a Hollywood production--with a cast starring not only Hemingway and Perkins, but F. Scott Fitzgerald, Helen Hayes, David O. Selznick, and Gary Cooper. Set in an endlessly fascinating age, the 1920s. It tells a backstage story of the tangle of literature, publishing, and motion pictures in the formative years of a time when the possibilities of a new mass audience challenged and changed culture and literature forever.
