The present study investigated the clinical measurement of the impact of trauma in a sample of adults with histories of No Trauma (NT; n = 12), Non-Personal Trauma (NPT; n = 28), or Interpersonal Trauma (IPT; n = 15). As hypothesized, social support and a history of psychopathology significantly predicted individuals' current level of trauma-related distress. In addition to reporting less social support and more past psychological problems, participants with greater trauma-related psychopathology reported experiencing higher levels of persistent dissociation. Contrary to prediction, the Rorschach and Trauma Symptom Inventory (TSI; Briere, 1995) were not able to differentiate between the three groups using the PTSD-related TSI subscales and selected Rorschach variables hypothesized to be associated with posttraumatic symptomatology and persistent dissociation. Hierarchical logistic regressions were conducted to examine the incremental validity of the Rorschach and TSI in the prediction of NPT or IPT group membership. Results revealed that the Rorschach could not explain the variance between the NPT and IPT groups over and above that explained by the TSI. A post hoc principal component analysis revealed a potentially useful composite variable, Biphasic Response, composed of several Rorschach variables related to the biphasic cognitive process associated with PTSD. The study proposes that the Rorschach can be a valuable tool in the multimethod assessment of trauma, and the clinical implications of the results are discussed.

Co-occurring psychiatric conditions are extremely common among people who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The Oxford Handbook of Autism and Co-Occurring Psychiatric Conditions presents a compilation of the latest research in this area, summarized by internationally renowned experts. Each chapter presents an overview of the problem or disorder including information on prevalence in ASD and in the general public and a synthesis of the research on etiology, diagnostic best practices, and evidence-based intervention approaches. Case studies bring these concepts to life, and each chapter concludes with suggestions for future research directions in order to further develop our scientific and clinical understanding of the particular comorbidity. Given the fact that comorbidity is often a chronic and pervasive concern, this Handbook takes a lifespan approach, with each chapter touching on developmental aspects of the targeted problem, from early childhood through adulthood. The concluding section of the Handbook is comprised of content on clinical considerations and research approaches, including chapters on medications commonly used to treat co-occurring conditions, strategies for managing crisis situations in this clinical population, and community partnerships within an implementation science framework.

Comprehensive Handbook Of Psychopathology written by Henry E. Adams and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-17 with Psychology categories.

The first edition of Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology was published in 1984, al most a decade ago. In the interim there has been an explosion of information in psychopathology. Proliferation of knowledge has included a widening base of research data and changing or new concepts and theories regarding classification, measurement methods, and etiology of abnormal behaviors and mental disorders. It has been an active and productive period for biological and behavioral scientists and clinicians, particularly in terms of changing notions of the complex interaction of environmental and biological factors in many disorders. For example, with the classic disorders-such as anxiety and dissociative disorders-our understanding, while far from perfect, has been greatly enhanced in recent years. Whereas there was almost a vacuum of empirical knowledge ten years ago about the personality disorders, concentrated efforts have been undertaken to investigate classification, comorbidities, and expression of the personality disorders, and variants in normal personality traits. In addition, scientific advances in the fields of behavioral medicine, health psychology, and neuropsychology have greatly contributed to our knowledge of psychopathology and the interplay of psychobiological factors. It is now commonly acknowledged that psychopathology is not limited to the traditional mental illness categories; it also plays a significant role in many physical illnesses, such as cancer and AIDS. With these developments, it became clear that the first edition of this handbook was outdated and that a revision was needed.

Few phenomena are as widely experienced across different individuals, cultures, and contexts as that of traumatic stress. Whether as victims, perpetrators, supporters or simply observers, most people can identify to some extent with the psychological and physical consequences produced by traumatic events. This text examines the nature of traumatic stress, the contexts in which it occurs, and the needs and coping strategies of its survivors. Topics include the survivors of rape, soldiers of war, and the nature of coping with loss or trauma in old age. Furthermore, the roles of culture, social support, and more formal organizations in the ongoing process of overcoming trauma are explored as the text details the nature of traumatic experiences, the needs of survivors, and the challenges faced by those who wish to support and help those survivors.
