This is a story of Oldport, a historic, idyllic Norman Rockwell type village on the north shore of Long Island. The current residents are committed to preserving the idealized story book image and maintaining the status quo. When a local resident purchases a rundown landmark waterfront Inn and seeks village permission to replace it with a contemporary boutique hotel he meets fierce opposition from a united group of entrenched senior residents. The result is a classic struggle of progress versus preservation. Before the Village Board renders its decision on the new owners request for a rezoning permit, the revered Mayor is murdered in cold blood. The Mayor's death turns the village inside out. Ultimately, the police in a rush to solve the high profile murder case disregard evidence that incriminates several other suspects and arrest a young local builder for the crime. He is put on trial for murder in the first degree and faces the death penalty. Oldport is being twisted and turned by a 21st century sociological tornado that exposes a historic village in crisis. A pattern of racial discrimination, sexual harassment, marital infidelity, embezzlement and political corruption surface and Oldport, the model American village teeters on the precipice of destruction.

Citing numerous sources and interviewing witnesses and descendants, the exploits of Rockwell are detailed to form a picture of a man on the one hand kind to children and his friends, while on the other capable of the most grisly murders of perceived enemies of the church. Although open to criticism for its anti-Mormon bias, attempting to accurately portray Rockwell is difficult as he did not keep a personal diary and many of his activities were shrouded in secrecy. Included are 12 pages of illustrations.
