When the Civil War began in 1861, 30-year-old William Babcock Hazen was a first lieutenant and assistant instructor of infantry tactics at the U.S. Military Academy. At the war's conclusion in 1865, he commanded an army corps with the rank of major general. Two decades later, Hazen wrote A Narrative of Military Service in the midst of controversy which marked the last 25 years of his life, and the book was aimed in large part to silence vituperative criticism of his wartime record. This record included command of the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, a brigade in the Army of the Ohio and the Army of the Cumberland, and a division in the Army of the Tennessee. A strict disciplinarian who demanded the best from his men, he gained the lasting respect of General William T. Sherman and enjoyed lifetime friendship with fellow Ohio General James A. Garfield, who became the nation's 20th president. Hazen's colorful, controversy-filled career during and after the Civil War is generally not well known today. To his military contemporaries, however, he was either a thorny anethema or a hero, and by merit or design his name continually was thrust into the public arena. Steadfast in his convictions, he came to be recognized throughout his long service as an able officer and a dangerous enemy. In war as in peace, those who dared cross him did so at their own peril. This reprint edition of Hazen's original 1885 work features the addition of 71 photographs and a new introduction by Richard A. Baumgartner. -- Inside jacket flap.

Excerpt from A Narrative of Military Service I send out this book as my contribution toward the history of our heroic age. It may awaken proud recel lections in the breast of an old comrade; it may make a son's heart exalt at the sight of his father's name; above all, it may help to reveal, to establish, and to confirm the truth, which it is the part of every one to tell, and from which neither the brave men whom I led, nor their leader, have as soldiers anything to fear. When Finland gained its independence from Russia in 1917, the country had not had a military for almost two decades. The ensuing creation of a new national conscript army aroused intense but conflicting emotions among the Finns. This book examines how a modern conscript army, born out of a civil war, had to struggle through social, cultural and political minefields to find popular acceptance. Exploring the ways that images of manhood were used in the controversies, it reveals the conflicts surrounding compulsory military service in a democratic society and the compromises made as the new nation had to develop the will and skill to defend itself. Through the lens of masculinity, another picture of conscription emerges, offering new understandings of why military service was resisted and supported, dreaded and celebrated in Finnish society. Intertwined with the story of the making of the military runs the story of how manhood was made and remade through the idealized images and real-life experiences of conscripted soldiers. Placing interwar Finland within a broad European context, the book traces the origins of competing military traditions and ideological visions of modern male citizenship back to their continental origins. It contributes to the need for studies on the impact of the Great War on masculinities and constructions of gender among military cultures in the peacetime period between the two world wars.

Excerpt from Volunteering in India: Or an Authentic Narrative of the Military Services In the following narrative an attempt has been made to relate the military services of the Bengal Yeomanry Cavalry during the Indian Mutiny, and Sepoy War; and as truth lies in a small compass, so this little volume contains no fiction, nor will any conjectural narration be found in its compressed chapters of unembellished facts. Parenthetically, it may be recorded in this place that, as the Bengal Yeomanry Cavalry was the parent, or pioneer Corps, of the great Patriotic Force now established and consolidated in England, it is entitled to claim the proud distinction of having undeniably originated the modern Volunteer movement throughout the British Empire, and this narrative will tend to show that the Corps was worthy of that proud position. Although more than thirty years have elapsed since the "transitory regiment" passed away with the shifting tide of events, the subjoined narrative is the legitimate offspring of my manuscript journal, kept with diligence and care at the time when the various movements, scenes, and actions it describes occurred.
